The Alien world: Gaiun(Gaia)
« on: October 25, 2012, 12:49:23 am »

Hey guys, I've been worldbuilding a bit, and I think it might help if I have some feedback as well as some people pushing me for details I might miss. All this is planning for a book I might try to write sometime, and besides that, worldbuilding is fun! I hope you'll have fun reading about all this sort of stuff, even without much of a plot latched on to it, it's fun to think about how this would work in real life.

Anyways, I'll be doing this in chunks, and you guys can choose which chunk comes next. The first chunk is the sentient race inhabiting the planet, called Gaiun, a slightly larger-than-Earth planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B. Gaiun (originally called many names by the goblin tribes and still called Gaia by the humans -The suffix "-un" meaning "man" in the goblin tongue and "-a" meaning "woman") is heavy on Chlorine, though not to a toxic level, and this resulted in bacteria taking a backseat to fungi in terms of decomposition. But we're here to talk about Goblins.

Spoiler: Reproduction (click to show/hide)

So what next, if anything? The world has a diverse array of Flora and Fauna, and the Goblins have a culture and language that is undeniably alien, but oddly resonant. It's your choice.

From what I read I assume human came to this planet and started to push their society onto the Goblins, and it seems that the Goblins assimilated very well into human society. But wouldn't there be some splinter groups of goblins that rebel against humans or is well past that part of assimilation.

That's a important part of their history!

Suffice to say any Goblins that didn't integrate well into human culture aren't around anymore. We kind of... blew them up. Most of the humans who did that though are dead too. Only a few tribes of Goblins managed to return to Earth with the surviving humans and eventually settled mainly in Ohio and sections of Africa. About half live in exclusively Goblin communities, the other half have completely molded into human society and live like humans, though generally avoiding urbanization. Of course, there are outliers in every species; a few goblins have adapted very well to City life, some are violent and agressively territorial, so on and so forth, but mainly they fall within the general line of "Out of cities, small groups and highly accepting of forign culture.

Unfortunately, there are separatist groups ranging from the peaceful, "velvet revolution" types mainly based in America and Europe to more violent ones looking to form their own nation in Africa and central Austrailia. Usually these separatist groups are puppeted by human interests and fail to achieve their objective, or when they do they're almost immediately subjugated by a dictatorial regime of some human overlord. The ones in America are puppeted too by both Democrats and Republicans, with the Repubs using them for gathering money and frightening the xenophobes, and the Democrats using them as campaign workers for no pay, promising them riches and land only to pull it out from under them through legal jargon, not unlike the Native Americans and European settlers.

That isn't to say Humans failed to adapt to Goblin Culture though! Many humans have been startlingly friendly to the goblins, as eveidenced by the popular sitcom Tall & Short. Much of the humor arises from the differences in culture of the two, or from the irony in the title; Tall is the Goblin, and Short is a human afflicted with dwarfism.

Gaiun was studied hard before it's destruction, and judging from recent findings from the Ganymede Black Hole, it's possible the bomb wasn't as permenant as first belived. Some goblins retain hope they wil one day set foot on their homeland again, and have kept seeds dry and safe to replant the Flora on Gaiun.
