On Marksdwarves.
« on: October 24, 2012, 07:56:48 pm »

Ive provided them with firing ranges, However..... They only train about 1/2 the time. The other half of the time, they just say they are unavailable for training.

Do they occasionally decide that they want to practice melee combat, and wont use my training targets?

In my experience, short answer is Yes, there is nothing you can do about it.  Actually 1/2 the time is much better than I ever get.

You need to try to set up some live training which is the best solution to this I know

You can try turning their training alert on and off, they tend to train more like that...

I see mine go on Individual Training, while Inactive and not hauling stuff.  I order marksdwarf squads to Station and Defend Burrow.  I've never had much luck with the Train order either.  As a matter of fact, the first thing I do after creating a squad, is cancel those scheduled Train orders.  Its like they go to a Weapon Rack, and beat it with there crossbow, when I do that.  That's not what I want them doing...  Course I shouldn't be setting the Weapon Rack flag for their squad, to T.  I do put a T on Archery Targets for them.  But never schedule them...  I could be doing it wrong, but for now, it seems to work like this, well enough.  I still get some, that go into Melee.  I think its because they eventually break their quivers and haven't got replacements in stock.  Sincerely, Knutor

I found a good way to guarantee that they will train their marksmanship:

Draft a bunch of diligent dwarves onto a squad that only trains at archery targets.
Leave them inactive, with no jobs.

They will now spend all their free time (Which is all their time) training on archery targets.

Live training?

live training gives 4 times more experience than archery practice does. Pit some armored gobbos and shoot them from a decent range (to not make a quick work of them)

The marksdwarves I trained through the method I discovered earlier.....

All went insane. They wouldn't stop traning, and went berzerk.

An army of fourty Berzerk marksdwarves (Including 4 legendary ones!) was FUN.
However, I was left with one living, sane marksdwarf in my fortress. He doesn't care about life anymore.

All of them went berserk? Man, that's some coincidence.

I got lucky and a Bronze Colossus has come to visit my fort. I quickly built some traps and let him in :)

With the room below, my second squad of marksdwarves became Legendary in about 2-3 months. The first one is still level 8-10 after all the years they spent training and defending the fort.

The other half got killed by the berserk ones.
