How to do an OR pressure switch?
« on: October 24, 2012, 02:04:41 am »

OK, I made it magma, and thought it would be fun to try out minecarts.  Somewhere else in this forum is a good design for tight ramps for sending things up, and suggested to just have the minecart fall for going down.

This brings an issue with minecarts full on ores dropping 80 Z levels on a dorfs head.  I was thinking at the bottom of the shoot have a pressure switch, than when it's heavy (has stuff on it), the floodgate downstairs opens, and the floodgate upstairs shuts (preventing anything else from dropping until the original is picked up).  So either the bottom door OR the top door is open, but never both

Is there an easy way to do this without building crazy dwarven-computing contraptions?

You can build two pressure plates next to eachother, each linked to one floodgate.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

How guaranteed is it that the minecart/stone will hit two plates?

Use a bridge(raising, not retracting) on one side and a floodgate on the other.

Pressure plate signal raises the bridge and blocks access while opening floodgate.

Of course, the drawbridge might occasionally smash a child/cat into another dimension.  But that's just more fun.

Simple!  I forgot those two are logical opposites
