I actually just returned to this thread to edit my OP to say "Also other than Dwarf Fortress" because I knew that would be the first suggestion otherwise

also mainly because I've modded DF half to death already.

What kind of modding are you looking for? Something with instructions, like DF or DoD, or an open-source one that you can do whatever you want with (if you know how to code)?

If the latter, then you could make your own. Or, Cataclysm is pretty cool.

Cataclysm is that zombie roguelike, eh?
I'll give it a try, but personally I was looking for something a bit more aangbandish. If it's really fun then it might satiate my modding urges.

As to whether it's something with instructions or open source, I'd prefer something with either instructions or some kind of tutorials to get me started if it's open source.

also I'll look up Prospector RL after Cataclysm.

There's also the latest incarnation of ToME, which is mostly in Lua.

Both the gearheads (at least pre-lua conversion for GH2) are pretty easy to add items and mecha to. Missions and suchlike are a bit more fiddly.

Probably more I'm forgetting. Lots of RLs are open source, so... yeah.

also have been playing cataclysm. Jolly good fun. Drank a soda and threw it at a zombie. Missed, but my point was made.
Gonna try modding it now.

Personally, I only play Sangband nowadays. It satisfies my skill-progression urges.

Steamband was fun for a change of pace.  And yea gearheads would be cool, and ToME4 shouldn't be too hard - Lord Bucket had a pretty good start at a Bubblegum Crisis mod for ToME3...

X@COM just gained mod capabilities and folks are already managing nifty things with it...check the topic in this very board.
