Interesting to hear that Toady is still working on side projects like in the old days. And I agree with his decision to be silent about it. The moment he said he was working on some 2 day ASCII game we would be all over it like starving dogs.

What did you guys think of the whole windows 8 discussion? For those that can't be bothered listening it is near the end and regards the fact that windows 8 places severe restrictions on what apps can be run in the form of licensing fees and certification. The suggestion was that this could be a threat to dwarf fortress as many win8 users won't be able to play.

I am personally of the opinion that it is all part of a trend in the right direction. PC games are becoming less profitable, meaning big development studios are moving away from the platform in attempt to maintain their multi-million bottom lines. This has opened the stage for independent developers and people who don't require millions of dollars to produce content. This thing with windows is the logical next step, microsoft wants $$$ and they are making changes based on this. DF is already out for linux and my hope is that windows 8 will prompt many small developers to consider also moving to linux. I would have migrated my desktop years ago if there was a good selection of games available. In combination with the fact that steam is making a concerted effort to build a linux presence, I think what we are seeing is the end of windows dominance in the pc gaming market, and the dawn of a new era of open, community driven content that is moddable, cheap/free and packed with new creative ideas and innovations. I support and praise microsoft for helping this process along and will also laugh heartily when it destroys them.

That is true for Windows RT.
That is false for Windows 8.

Windows RT, the tablet version of Windows 8, works with the windows store and apps needs certifications.

Windows 8, the desktop operatign system, can run everything with no restriction.

In the interview they talked as if there was only Windows RT on tablets.
They are wrong, gave false information and panicked for no reason.

Dwarf Fortress is working just as well in windows 8 as it is in windows 7, right now, today. Install windows 8 in a virtual machine, copy over your DF folder and play.

But if you go to a store and buy a Windows RT tablet like Microsoft Surface, then you will be limited to the application store indeed.

The Surface Pro tablet will be just like a desktop and run any apps.

Windows RT is for devices powered by CPU using the ARM architecture.
Windows 8 is running on x86 and run anything.

There is no crisis, the is no panic. Only misunderstanding.

The only thing the podcast hosts seemed to misunderstand is whether Windows 8's familiar desktop mode (not metro) came up with a warning when you tried to run an unfamiliar program. Other than that, they were reasonable and knowledgable about Windows 8.

What we were talking about really is the direction of this and the inevitable future where the desktop version of Windows is completely superceded by the RT version, as happened with DOS. Upcoming Windows 8 I'm not so worried about, apart from how severe the warning not to run programs might be (the screen shots I've seen look bad). Look at the trend here instead of just the immediate future.

Is there any chance of a transcript? I broke my headset and I'll have to wait until I get paid to go out and buy new ones.

I want a transcript as well.My english is just not good enough to follow it.

Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

Well that was interesting. I think I just realized that toady may be living my dream lifestyle... :c

Toady and I laugh the same way! I don't think it's a very healthy way of laughing.

Me too, but I'd want more money.

Don't forget to hand money to toady for christmas.  Thio cheques inc

I understand the concern but do not believe that RT will eventually completly replace the desktop version.

The Surface Pro tablet will be based on x86 and use Windows 8, not RT.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro, a slightly thicker version of the device which runs Windows 8 rather than Windows RT and is based on Intel processor architecture, will be coming in the run up to Christmas.
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/1651434/microsoft_officially_launches_windows_8_and_surface_rt_tablet.html

Not even all tablets will be on RT, the Pro version is using a Core i5 cpu and dwarf fortress will run on it natively. I am planning to buy one and play DF on it.

Also consider the enterprise environment, most of them are still running Windows XP and they depends on a lot of backward programs. There will always be a version of windows which can run custom programs. Entreprises would never upgrade to an RT version with Apps only, and Microsoft won't go that way.

As for displaying a warning when running non-certified programs, this could happen just like Windows 7 display a warning before installing an unsigned device driver. Plus such a warning could be disabled.

Microsoft released Visual Studio 2012 express. It comes in 3 version, one for web, one RT apps, and one for Desktop apps. Its free and the desktop version and web version is a continuation of Visual Studio 2010, where they still allow for regular desktop mode development.

I see no reason to fear that we will be eventually forced to either use an old version of windows or be stuck with the application store and nothing else.

I think the most important piece of information we take from the interview is that Toady has no medical insurance. It's on us to make sure he can afford it, guys.

I might be wrong, but I think even if he had more money, he wouldn't get it. :)

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Living without health insurance is risky business, and it's depressing how millions of people are denied coverage, but I don't want to derail this thread with politics.

We're his only source of income, so if anyone will provide his healthcare, it has to be us. Considering that he lives on Dr. Pepper and never sees the sun if he can help it, he can't be the healthiest guy in the world. He's going to need medical care ( though not for skin cancer)
