World War 1 Project
« on: October 23, 2012, 02:41:21 pm »

So, yeah, I have a World War 1 poster to do for U.S. History, it's due in a few weeks.
Anyway, I chose Industry as my subject, and I just can't find anything that isn't on Ask.com or Wikipedia.
We aren't allowed to use Wikipedia because "Anyone can go in and edit it".
Anyway, do you guys know any website I can use?

Thanks.

Just use the articles that Wikipedia cites.  Most of their articles have some decent citation.

Or head to the library and check out an Encylopedia (those books that pre-date Wikipedia).  Your teacher will love that!

EDIT: Why did you chose "industry" anyways?  WWI marked the birth of airplanes, trench warfare, tanks, poison gas, stormtroopers (bet you though George Lucas invented them, huh  ;D), and the first instance where the French Foreign Legion (a military unit made up of those convicted of crimes that chose military service over prison) actually fought in their home country.  It also featured Zepplins bombing London, gigantic cannons, pointy helmets, machine guns, and horse calvary.

I play Dwarf Fortress, why wouldn't I choose Industry?

I'll check the library in town for an Encyclopedia tomorrow.

I didn't think of using the articles Wikipedia itself uses, i'll look into that.
Thanks!

Fair enough.  You'll probably find working conditions in DF are safer than in WWI factories.   :P

Glad to help.

Does your school have any accounts on databases you can use? I've always found databases to be an easy way to get "reputable" sources. Or maybe just google for sites and cite those sites and not the actual search engine.

First of all, Wikiepdia is a pretty safe bet most of the time. People only do outlandish things to the stuff that doesn't really matter.(Vidogames and stuff.) The site is heavily moderated, but this isn't an argument with your teacher.
I just look in the citation sections, go to my local library and get the info from there.
Or just pick some book that pertains to the subject, use Wikipedia, and cite the book you "used" as a source.
I'd recommend the former, it's much more rewarding. Even though the latter is hard to detect barring full on copy and paste.

Man I remember doing reports and using really esoteric and hard to find books as sources. It pissed off my english teacher because he was incredibly anal about ferreting out cheats.

Well, we have to make a moderately large poster, with 15 facts related to the topic we chose.

Right now, i'm up to about 2-3 facts.

Have you tried your textbook? If it's an AP class the textbook is usually pretty good.
