Take that, vampire!
« on: October 22, 2012, 03:13:56 pm »

I had a bit of a vampire problem for a while in my fort, with a few dwarves losing all their life liquid, only being discovered long after. I kept groaning every time they'd find a body, but no vamp. Thankfully, he eventually became either desperate or stupid, because he decided to drink from a lazy dwarf who fell asleep in a hospital bed. An actual patient of the hospital woke up and witnessed it.

Turns out he was the mayor! Very charismatic fellow, when he wasn't killing his constituents. Convicted him of all the murders, stripped him of his title (and gave it to Obok Kubukdodok [seriously]), got a peasant to become captain of the guard and bruise him up arrest him, then did this:

Spoiler: Punishment (click to show/hide)

Dug a crappy cell, tied him in it, then filled it with rotten corpses and locked and forbade the door. Enjoy the miasma, sucker!

I would have him be broker or something like that, but I have a really good one already and because of bugs he'd be less useful than the original.

You can do better then that! Surround the cell in magma. Wall it off. Have the only drainage+exit be covered by a magma proof adamantine bridge raised above two ends of open space, making it almost indestructible. Link everything to a lever, ensure all exits are shut, and break the lever.
I assume the cell is already underground enough that the vampire will have 0 chance of escape. But just to be sure, also drop a mountain on it.

Sadly, can't do any of those things (besides wall it off, but that wouod. Even if I had gotten the magma and adamantine, there'd be no space to set it up. It's on the floor which was gonna be the jail floor, immediately under my catacombs, and 2 under my bedrooms (have catacombs right under the beds as a statement :P)

Most of my time with DF has been spent watching Captain Duck or playing Adventure mode anyway, only recently got into fortress mode, so I'd probably screw up. But hey, it'd be fun, and Fun. May set up a torture-y room next fortress, but I still wanna get a feel for the metal industry and stuff first :)

You could still link the door to the lever and break it. That makes it thief proof at least :)

And if you don't know how to do something, what better way to do it than try out? If you fail... Well, losing is fun!

What I did with my vampire in my last fort was put her in a squad and station her on my drawbridge that raises to form a wall. Took two tries to kill her. They never found the body.

I put my coffin area next to the hospitol beds so your under the bed idea is not so weird.

(Anyone else have any stories that can compare to a man being beaten to death with his own trousers by a giant gopher?)
(when goblins showed up, I mumbled "Smithers! Release the hounds!" and had the lever pulled.)

Good idea, will do that if he goes nuts and breaks the chain (well, rope, but hey)

Heheheh, maybe I'll do something of that nature if I get sick of having it around. First, though, Exmayor McVampire needs to serve his sentence of 362 days in stinky, stinky prison :)

Hahahaha that is the most depressing hospital ever. Do you also have a sign that says "Days since last death:" and the 0 is as dusty as the rest of the sign?

Hmm,  !!Science!! question.

If somebody is isolated from the rest of the fortress for a prolonged period of time, such as walling off a vampire for many years, will their relationships with other dwarves diminish?  For example if Urist McVampire had been listed as a close freind with Lobed McHadn'tReallyNoticedThoseSharpTeethBefore, will the two of them be passing aquaintances after 5 years in lock up?

I'll test that :D ... At least I would, if he had any friends :-\ only passing acquaintances. Will test if he forgets them entirely though, he's got 27 right now. Future people, when I bring this thread back, please don't make necromancy jokes :)

It seems to me that relationships rust. It seems that in the past when I've drafted dwarves with friends into the military, after a couple years of non-stop training they only have 'passing acquaintances.' Then again, I could have just checked the migrant soldiers, who get drafted in as soon as they arrive, which would skew the results a bit.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Makes sense. Will see if he entirely forgets the people he knew (passing acquaintances with the peasant I drafted to beat and arrest him hahaha) after sitting in there, the only stimuli the rotten smells and the sliding sounds of his rope.

I have noticed no such "relationship rust." Dwarves don't seem to forget friends so easily.

I keep a dining room inside the hospital. It's educational.

ÑECROMANCER

It's funny even if necromancers were patched out when Toady added the randomized magic system. Anyway, gotta pack for university :)

The fort crumbled 3 subversions ago, man, dunno why we're talking in this thread.

Edited for spelling mistakes.
