I didn't know you couldn't put a bed outside.  Good to know.  I suppose using armor/weapon stands does make it easier to see at a glance.  I like having those beds for my exhausted training military, but that's just because I use dorms instead of bedrooms (no sock ownership issues that way).

Also, on a semi-related tangeant, what's up with the fact that a legendary dorm room does nothing for happiness?  It's not like the fact that they don't own the dining room keeps them from enjoying it...

On the whole, I get more good thoughts/less bad thoughts from having a dormitory than from not having a dormitory.

I think it's more they just don't think it's admirable place. They're happier even with a single tile bedroom made of bed, I suppose because their 'mentality' was made to be happier with private bedroom while enjoying socializing and great halls.

Dorm still at least stop them being unhappy about sleeping on the ground, though, and give them a secure spot to sleep at if they don't have a personal bedroom. Well, except for hunters.

Yeah I never mess with individual bedrooms any more (except for nobles), just too much micro-management.

I get much better happiness results, for less effort, simply by putting a single quern, hatch, grate, cabinet, etc. in the dining room entrance. Then dwarfs who like those things get a happy thought every time the walk past, easy peasy! :)

Are you certain that it doesn't?  Or did you engrave it, prior to having Legendary Engravers?  A low skilled smoother, just doesn't cut the cheese.  Without a high skilled engraver doing the work; those engravings could be, UGLY!  Each surface has a quality rating.

Are lots of masterworks present?  Or is the engraver's work, blasé?

I have a legendary dining room, and almost everybody I look at it says, "(S)He ate in a legendary dining room recently."

Dorm, not Dining.

I think this engraved stuff has something to do with Artistic appreciation.  However that might just be with Statues and Slabs.  I don't know.  With F command we can prolly verify whether 'Noted' masterengravings are causing happy thoughts, ?.  That might be a bit of a slow iSCIENCE!

I have a royal bedroom as my dorm.  It gives no happy thoughts.  So engraving has nothing to do with it.  In fact I'm pretty sure it's not even engraved.

Dorms just aren't something dwarves will get happy about.  It seems a little odd to me, that's all.

I think dwarves does notices valuable things and gives them happiness on it's own, engraving counting also. Though the frequency in 34. seem to have gone down a lot compared to frequency in 31., since I've not seen as much art apperication in thoughts lately.

As mentioned above, a dormitory's primary benefit is not the good thoughts it creates, but the bad thoughts it prevents!

Oh I understand that.  I was just hoping a really nice dorm would give some benefit.  As it stands now, there's no reason whatsoever to make your dorms really nice.  Which I found out after I made my dorms really nice :(

Oh they can get happy thoughts from the individual nice things in the dorm, so it is not a waste of effort. Put some lovely floodgates and caged animals scattered around. :)
