If I may make a suggestion should we run another EU game: We should play as minors only. Limit of 1-5 provinces, depending on their value.

Because as it is more and more evident, players who start large are always going to present a very massive challenge to those who start minor, unless they do very little for several tens of years. Or they're poor players (*cough* Xeron).

Not only that, but I have a feeling that the larger players are getting at least mildly bored right about now in this game.

Besides, who doesn't want to unite Britain under Munster, France under one of their vassals, Spain under Navarra, Itally under Modena, and so on?

"I'm going to encourage weaker players to take major powers, and stronger players to take smaller nations, in the interests of keeping the game going longer."
So... Muscowy and England.  ???

It would certainly be a more dynamic game if those two (and Scandinavia, to a lesser extent) weren't so ludicrously oversized compared to the rest of the players.

To be fair, Fivex did start out as Denmark.

But doesn't Denmark have avenues to rapidly expand? I mean, it took him but 2 sessions to become huge.

I am pretty impressed with Scandinavia. It was insanely lucky to inherit Norway and Sweden together so early on. I mean, I still haven't inherited Silesia and Luneburg. That's some flippin' magic.

This is also my first, yet I chose Bavaria.

You are missing the whole point of my post. I quoted Barbarossa's post, not yours; which is to say I am not refering to this being my first MP as why I picked England, but rather, that Twiggie had no means to measure whether I should have been handed a smaller nation.

I think its less to do with how good players are and more to do with the positioning of players. I don't think its a coincidence that the strongest two countries happen to be the ones sitting on the east and west of the player group, just as I doubt its a coincidence that the two weakest countries happen to be in the centre of it.

If we do get another MP game of this I'll probably make a rule of extreme minors only - force people to play countries like Mentese, Candar, Wales, Mantua etc etc. There's still a good variation of balance within those countries (considering starting with a CoT would be banned). I think I'd probably make it a last man standing game, but you're not allowed to declare war on another player until you've formed a country (or some other requirement for those countries who dont have a nice formable).

But what about the players who may still be attempting to claw out an empire by the time the first person forms a country? Seems like the moment the first countries start forming, the slower players will be wiped out.

Isn't that the whole point of a last man standing game? Just make it so that said formed nations can be declared war upon  by those still forming nations.

Yes, but it seems like Twiggie wants to at least give everyone a chance to get started since he mentioned not starting a war until a country is formed. I was just wondering if it was intentional or unintentional that he left open that formed countries can attack unformed countries.

yes it was intentional. by the time you get people forming countries if you're not large enough to hold them off you die. OTOH the first person to form a country is likely to face a coalition of smaller countries when he forms.

im not sure about allowing formed nations to be declared on, it seems it would discourage forming nations and by extension inter-player competition.

EDIT: hmmm, maybe add no PUing anything (even by lucky RM) and no player alliances/1v1 human wars only. I'd probably draw up a list of balanced countries beforehand and allow players to pick from that, and aim to finish the whole thing within 4 sessions or so
