The magma.... it keeps coming......
« on: October 19, 2012, 05:55:52 pm »

I have a bit of a problem in my fort. Problem involving magma. Lots of magma.

That, is a simple magmaquiduct, with a bit of a storage area. So, you might ask, what is the problem?

I have no idea how this happened, but it did....

I have no way to stop the flow of magma. Simple as that. Somehow I screwed up when I dug into the magma underground, and now it just keeps coming....

and coming......

and coming......

You know the walls that are stopping the magma from flooding? They never used to be there. It used to just be a moat, with a small bridge long since covered in magma. But, those wall's won't last forever, so I now turn to you....

How do I stop the magma flow?

Edit; Aw crap, for some reason I thought this was the Dwarf mode discussion :p. Oh well.

I was kind of trying to make it dramatic :p. And no, they wont. I will have to build up once it floods over, and im too lazy.

And how to I block that area with all the magma there?

Designate a burrow in the magmaduct and watch your dorfs go down in a blaze of glory!

...Or just wall off the outside and let the upper world suffer the wrath of your Boatmurdered.

For a really pointlessly time consuming solution, you could always roof over the entire flood area, then it won't overspill the walls.
Bonus points if you build some magma-safe pumps into the structure that, at the flip of a switch, will douse invaders in magma. Then you can just claim it was all according to plan.

If there's a river or creek, dig a tunnel branching off of it so that you can pour a large supply of water onto the magma, and cool it. Be sure to use a floodgate, so you can safely turn it off.

Also, what's with all the broken bolts lying around in the picture?

Quick! Before the magma overflows build a giant hollow stone urist with pumps leading up to the eyes. The magma will then be routed through giant urist's eyes keeping it from overflowing your poor walls.

Bonus points: surround giant urist with a wooden moat.

Have you ever made a magmafall? Be the first fortress in your world to have one! You will be the envy of all dwarf kind.

Not the most exciting solution, but let the magma out into a large open space.  The diagonal means it shouldn't be pressurized and if the area its funneled into it wide enough it'll evaporate faster than it spreads. (happened to me on accident while trying to fill a magma reservoir. 1 tile channel can't handle a 25x25 room)

I though magma didn't follow pressure physics?

I always seem to end up with a magnificent burial complex and nowhere near enough bodies to fill it, or far too many bodies and nowhere to put any of them.

It doesn't, so it doesn't matter anyway!

(unless you force it to with screw pumps, but that's not the case here)
