The basic ninja-proofing plan right now is to dig a tunnel that goes straight down 50', left 10' and then up 30' or so before opening into a large chamber where we stay. The hole leading in/out of that chamber will have someone's spare cloak covering it so that you can't get in without it being super obvious that someone is passing through the tunnel.

E: Also, because this is seriously like 5 minutes of work for an Ankheg, it gets to make a dozen identical bases throughout the jungle that we leave empty. Just to confuse the enemy.

My only issue with this is... What if the mage has a spell that can collapse the tunnels on us? I don't mean trap us down there, because then you can just summon another Ankheg, but I'm worried about 'Rocks fall everyone dies' type things. Maybe put us down a bit deeper?

Going deeper is possible (I have Summon Undead Thoqqua for getting through rock) but much slower than sticking to dirt.

And I'd like to remind you of my adamantine pick. Even if you don't trust me with "make a straight tunnel" at the moment, you could probably convince me to temporarily part with it so Asrean or someone could help dig.

This is a good point. We could leave about ten of the dead-end tunnels around, then take our chosen tunnel and make it even deeper and a little more complex to make it even worse on the ninjas.

We'll also want to use Drak's decanter to set up a small stream across the 10' horizontal passage, both for sanitation and in order to block Locate Creature spells (which are blocked by running water).

And being underground? I like the stream idea. We should also consider some wooden spikes or something. Perhaps have the wooden spikes ringing the inside of the second vertical tunnel, pointing down, right over the surface of the water. Then maybe have a pile of medium-large stones hooked to the spikes somehow, so when the ninjas start to pull the spikes out, the stones fall on their heads.

We could set up the passage AFTER we've gone through, except for one person, then have it set up.

You misunderstand what I meant. You described the trap thusly:

x is where we would be hiding. Now, the traps I described would be placed at y, the spikes facing downwards.* If we choose to leave, all we'd have to do is disable the rockfall trap (which should be easy enough, just unhook it or whatever) and then drop down. The spikes are ringed in, facing down. You can drop OUT easily, but climbing up IN is when they become dangerous.

*The rockfall trap would obviously be up on the ledge to the place where we are hiding, to give the rocks some time to pick up some good speed, but the trigger would either be hooked to the spikes, to prevent the baddies from removing them, or be a trip wire or something, strung over the entrance above the spikes. Also, it would be best to place the spikes RIGHT over the surface of the water, preferably almost touching it. Because the baddies natural instinct after coming through the tunnel-of-unknown-length-filled-with-water should be to surface... Into the spikes.

And even better: We could make it so there's a passable space only big enough for a Small creature to pass through, then use my Ring of Shrinking when we needed to get in!
