Undead siege!!!
« on: October 16, 2012, 10:10:44 pm »

So I'm trying to hold off my first undead siege. I have about 70 dwarves and my standing military is about...6 guys. The great thing is they're packing Adamantine equipment. Also: I'm holding the undead at bay with an adamantine drawbridge!!! I have no idea how I'm going to outlast them though...I feel as if I'm eventually going to have to turn and fight them but the problem is I don't know if we can take on that many undead. Is there a way to outlast the undead? ANY suggestions would be awesome!

Just sit back and ignore them. You'll still get goblin ambushes, and eventually they'll stumble upon the necromancers.

As long as you have a renewable source of mood and mandate items, you can hide out indefinitely and not have to worry about protecting those stupid diplomats and liaisons. You must have something that you've been putting off due to outside disturbances?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Luckily I do have a pretty well running source of food and liquor to keep my dwarves alive/content. The scary part was as they started their siege two goblin ambushes came out but they were obliterated by the zombies and now there seems to be some goblin zombies appearing in the ranks!

How many undead are there?

They are pretty flimsy, if you don't count their reanimation skills. You can drop the bridge on them, which should smash a few. Raise the bridge again so that only a few get in. Kill the few with the dwarves, repeat :)

I've been using this on goblin ambushes. If the bridge kills enough of them, they even retreat. Just don't put your soldiers near the bridge, or they'll run out just as you raise it again.

Actually dead caravans result in mountains of junk littering the countryside. One of the caravans I got was hauling 7 wagons. All that stuff would take forever to dump, and it'll hurt the framerate if you just leave it there.

Caravans don't turn up during sieges, though they may be on the map already if they were timed to arrive before the siege. I think I was once sieged for a good couple of years by the undead before their puppeteers were flushed out by goblin ambushers. It was most restful.

So I tried the open and close the drawbridge tactic...but none of my dwarves pulled the lever to close it again!!! So my fortress is lost but what an epic battle it was!!!

64 dwarves and nobody pulled it? What were they doing?

Maybe the the lever was not placed in a suitable location? Something I think I've learned from captain_duck's tutorials is to place the main gate lever in the dining room, that way it gets pulled faster.

That was why :P I had the lever very close to the drawbridge so by the time the first massive wave had gone in, only half of them went after my military who were stationed at the door, the rest turned right and dropped down the stairwell. I remember the plan to put a lever in the dining hall that would have made life SO much easier and we probably could've handled whatever made it through. Next time I build my fortress (heck I might just reclaim) I'm definitely using that one! :P

yeesh. Civilian dwarves will run away if so much as an angry chincilla glares them, you can't expect them to ignore the shambling dead to pull a lever...

Shambling? ::)

One of my axedwarves chopped a piece of hair off a horse, and it (the hair) ended up on top of a wall and reanimated.

It immediately started to sit menacingly at the nearby dwarves. Oh the panic that it caused by sitting there doing nothing...

I have my main lever control room immediately adjacent to my dining room. It's also on the inner side of a long hallway with various kinds of traps and fun prevention, so if anything gets close enough to stop Dwarves from pulling any of them, I'm screwed anyway. Haven't been screwed yet, although that one kobold that snuck past the war bears was an interesting twist.

The Well of Unlife is the greatest weapon against the undead. Spill the blood of a vampire into a well and allow trusted warriors to drink from it. The vampire soldiers will be more powerful than dwarves and the undead won't harm them.
