Another reason to hate elves
« on: October 16, 2012, 09:25:08 pm »

This happened to a friend a week or so ago, just remembered this, so running this off memories at the moment.

So there his fort was, running smoothly in its third spring, not a problem in the world, just setting up his hospital and such (I'm teaching him as he goes, so slow to set things up), and the elven caravan arrives.

I hadn't had him set up a trap to kill them yet, so he was just going to ignore the tree-humpers. He did, and kept working.
Suddenly a friggin' weretapir comes and attacks a bunch of his dwarves, killing somewhere around three or four babies, and a mother. He sends his untrained militia against it, and they fight. Eventually, he notices there's no more babies dying. Checks his Others in the unit screen, no weretapir. Checks the Dead/Missing screen, no weretapir.

We talked for a bit about what it could've done. We thought about it leaving the map, but it would have no reason, so we knew it must've changed back. We went and checked the name of it, and checked all his dwarves. None of them were the same as the weretapir. He checked his announcements again, and, of course, it was an elf. Stupid pig-like baby-killer.

He had to leave for work then, so I wasn't able to find out: was that an elf from the caravan, or was it just a coincidence?

Hmm... I'm not sure if caravan members are historical figures or not, like diplomats are.  Does anyone know?  If so, it's entirely possible one of the caravaneers could have been a werebeast.  I read a post about a clown caravaneer, but I'm not sure if that was modded or not.

Either way, kill them with fire.  It's the only way to be sure.

I like to think that on the other side of the world a human is walking on the beach, notices the water level suddenly drop twenty feet, and whispers "fucking dwarves."

Course they are. Remember the Trader-Migrant Bug?

That's the other way around though: they're Historical after they visit your fort. In my experience there's no evidence that traders are selected from a pre-existing pool of migrants, unless you count that you can meet "Trader" NPCs in Adventure mode, which is more likely due to the random distribution of skills to NPCs including Appraisal than to any notion of function linked to Fortress mode.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Also, werebeasts are exiled from society once they start rampaging every month. Probably a coincidence.

Alright, so it was just a coincidence then (the weretapir being an elf, not the being exiled part :P). Too bad he didn't get the caravan, instead going for the little bearded babies. Ah well.

You seem to imply that a another reason is needed to hate elves, OP.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy.

Ah, no, not what I meant. I just meant this is something you should tack onto your mental list of why you already hate them ;)

I like elves. They're lightweight, immortal, and easy to carry to the den for a snack.

Cassandra likes elves for their taste, Cobalt for it's pretty colors, and kittens for their cute intentions. She is incredibly strong, but horribly unlucky, and speaks with a rasping accent. She is white with black eyes. She likes dwarves for their hilarious intentions.

Primitive. Everyone knows You can't eat your foe. Roasting them over open magma is acceptable though.

Besides, Goblins are immortal, and less wimpy.

As a strict carnivore.. Dietary supplements, like elves, are important.

Elves eat the bodies of sentients, a horrible action not practiced by any civ that does not profess to to be evil. They are so high and mighty, making short jokes, but they're worse then the gobbos.

I'm a large snake in current gameplay. Elves. Are. Yummy! Goblins taste horrible. You ask your dwarves to eat goblins, and see what happens.

Would you eat a goblin? Don't know where those things have been.
