Well, if Barth starts to seem meta-y, blame it on his DnD world. There, a giant fire-spitting hound is a possible destroyer of villages and killer even of PCs. And Barth already saw a lot, so he is savvy about the strength of monsters.

Edit: By the damage the staff caused, I suspected it was heavy. Hence me choosing not to pick it up.
