It's cooking hot. Now either the grill has been turned up to twelve, or that's the engine room which has been set on fire.

The lack of sound means that there has been relatively little structural damage to the engine, but engines mean fuel and fuel does, evidently, not mesh well with heat. Alan starts running back to where he came from.
