Not as far as I know. Its evident that it massively speeds up moving around ores and things made of metal though. I usually have around 20 wheelbarrows in a fully mature fort to speed up all the bar/ore/stone transporting and it seems to be enough.

Even better than minecarts, they can be used through stairs just as quickly. Making a central staircase that more useful.
