Where do creatures spawn in caverns?
« on: October 15, 2012, 05:37:01 pm »

I use a lot of cavern water since outside is always frozen. I want to build walls to make a safe path to the pond.

So where do creatures spawn is this even possible?

On the edge, like every other monster.

Hmm, if you happen to have a pocket cavern with no map edge tiles, it will be sterile?

Never had a cavern that was completely isolated.  Might be possible on a 16x16 or other very large embark, but in adventure mode, most caverns I've found have gone on for tens of miles.

I don't think I've had a cavern without at least one partial map edge either.  Just a thought experiment.

You could always completely wall off your caverns with bridges or cast obsidian... I'd recommend a large and well-armed escort for this, though.

It's quite possible to wall off a section of cavern completely for safety, but some of the ceilings are damned high.

I wall off my caverns and allow for a small area to be open. Then make a wall around that area with a bridge. Then add a wall around that bridge and add another bridge.

Then monsters spawn, send military down to the first bridge area and close it. Then you open the other bridge and battle it on!

So far, I have gotten 3 forgotten beasts like this. Oddly enough the double tail scorpion died in 3 hits. first two were to some legs and then a militia captain kicked in the back of the head and bruised the brain. Very anti-climactic.

Do some wizardry with DFHack and use tile painting to make the edges unspawnable? Could work.
