The Dragon Riders, my first (mega?)project!
« on: October 15, 2012, 04:48:31 pm »

Been playing this simply amazing game for quite some time now, and after slaughtering the countless hordes of gobos, braving the plague ridden wasteland of a haunted embark site, and slaying every damn elf I could get my stubby little fingers on, there is a need for something more!
I dont know if any of you guys have read the Eragon books. But my idea is to re-create the Dragon Riders within DF.
Project would include a grand fortress, where carefully selected Dwarfs would train their very own dragon from birth. Each Dragon Rider is an Elite soldier, possessing legendary in all essential combat stats.
Also, as an initiation right, each Dwarf must craft his very own set of masterwork candy armor. I have not yet looked into dying a whole lot, but the idea is to dye the candy strands the color of their dragon, and then craft it into armor.
Before I take this on I was hoping the DF community here could help me answer a few questions.
1. Can Dragons fly? Ive never seen one fly, but you would assume. If not, can I raw edit to make them fly?
2. Can dorfs train rideable mounts, and then ride them. I see the damn goblins ride toads and shizniz all the time and I always wondered how I could get me one of those...
3. Does armor made from dyed candy strands actually change the color of the armor that it makes?

Wish me luck, many cans of Red Bull will be drunk tonight. Huzzah!

1 Not yet
2 not yet?
3 i don't think so

But it would be cool to at least make a castle based on the ones in the books, also, obtaining your first breeding pair of dragons is hard.. not to mention that dragons age incredibly slowly

I don't think dragons fly. At least so far I've heard that they don't. It might be possible to make them fly by editing the RAWs though.

Another problem you're going to have is I don't think dragon eggs hatch in vanilla DF without Raw editing. You should confirm that with someone more experienced on the subject though.

Yet another problem is that within a dwarves lifespan a dragon will only grow to a small fraction of it's maximum size, this doesn't really get in the way of anything, but it means the dragons won't be able to get to their full potential before their master snuffs it.

That said, I wish you luck in your endeavour!  :D

I also just had a human diplomat enter from the surface, hold a meeting, then exit the map via hell.... I guess he thinks he's pretty hardass.

Yeah but
Couldn't I just be like Galbatorix and use a little... "Magic" to force my dragons to grow faster?  ;D
And don't worry about the breeding pair. I have a breeding pair in my current fortress, have had for some time now. Plan is to copy that fort and dedicate it to this task.
Sucks about the riding part though :( Ill look into it more, braving the depths of the forums...
Some how, some way, I will do this
with the egg hatching thing... it says on the wiki that they don't hatch because the [CHILD] tag is missing. Ill probably just try adding it and see what happens. Ill keep this post updated, but thanks for the info guys :D

I liked Dragons: Lexicon Triumvirate better than Eragon

Riding and other forms of advanced pathing is still a far-off dream for fortress-bound dwarves. Toady will get to it, but it may be a long wait. Adventure mode riding will also be a pretty long wait.

Having your military train dragons form birth... Not the brightest idea, in my opinion. When they go to battle, their dragons will follow. When in combat, dragons will be dragons, dwarves will be dwarves, and the AI will do everything in it's power to piss you off. Be prepared for many, many ‼dwarfs‼ and a handful of stray dragons.

Actually, letting dragons roam around your fort is almost always a terrible idea. I mean, if the goblins are already inside, the furniture wrecked and most of your population is already dead, then by all means pull the lever and watch the ‼fireworks‼, but do you really want them starting fires for every little technically-not-friendly creature that comes within a quarter mile of them? Maybe chain them at the entrance, behind a drawbridge, and lower the bridge during sieges (chain them in such a way the bridge doesn't squash them)

Pretty much this, plus having to edit the RAWs to make dragons breedable and hatch their eggs before your fort dies.

I'm working on a fort that captures, trains, and breeds hydras, dragons, and rocs, and had to do some editing before even embarking. Of course the area I'm in probably isn't the best idea (!!Zombies!! and !!Husks!! everywhere) but I figure the added challenge will be worth it.

Not to mention the threat of one of my beasts dying or being husked, and thus destroying me totally. But hey, wheres the fun in something tame?

Legend tells of a fort besieged by a dragon. When 79 brave recruits fell to its breath, the last dwarf of the fort took up arms. He sprung from his sickbed and claimed an adamant one sword before he bulrushes the dragon. A clean swipe severs the head. But the dragon claws him in the lower body and burns him alive. As he melts into a pile of booze and fat, I rename him Ronnie James Dio and change his profession to dragonslayer. He will forever be immortalized and worshipped as a dragonslayer God.

You can make dragons fly, but you CANNOT make dwarves ride anything besides a minecart, ever. Goblins and other siegers appearing on mounts is a special case Toady has worked in in the distant past, but there is nothing you can do to make a creature mount up in any other circumstance. The race you're playing as also cannot fly in fortress mode because the pathing system doesn't know how to handle it. They're capable of it if you just add the [FLIER] tag, but the AI is too stupid to actually do so in the case of your own dwarves' decisions aobut where to go. A flying dwarf will still get stuck on top a wall if there's no ramp or stairwell, because they can't path without a ground-based route.

If you had control of a Goblin, such as in arena mode, could you mount a mountable creature? I'd test this right now but I'm currently at work.
Or is it that when a goblin army besieges your fortress, the mounted goblins enter the map mounted, and stay that way until dismount, at which point they can not re-mount.

If you like dragons you should really check out the Age of Fire series by E.E. Knight. Why? It's told from the viewpoint of dragons. And they're very... dragony.

it's quite possible that there is no "mount" command in the game yet, since i've only seen goblins show up on mounts and not get back on if one lost it's rider.

Maybe the raw mods and figuring out how to control the "war dragons" is the furthest this can go right now.
My idea would be to have various towers (or natural mesas) around the map with pastures designated at the top.  Assign dragons to a tower-pasture which would have them fly over the enemy and they (might?) stop to engage the enemy as they fly past.

Another AI work-around would be to use the military 'Station' command for a dragon+rider on a z level in the air, but that might not be supported either.

Dragon riders are cool and all, but the DF dragons don't fly and I doubt that dwarfs would want to leave solid ground anyway. Besides, there's a rather different creature I'd like to put my dwarf cavalry on.

I'd rather put dwarves on the back of utahraptors.

Because why not?
