Idle Dwarves Help?
« on: October 14, 2012, 03:26:03 pm »

I just started a new fortress, my first one ever. Im trying to build a brewery, but whenever i select it and place it down then select the material to build it with, none of the dwarves go to construct it. In the job list it shows it as inactive, even though some of my dwarves are idle, same thing goes with farming. What am i doing wrong?

You need someone whos a brewer and a farmer respectively as a profession, or at least with that profession turned on (they dont need to be good at it).

'v'iew them. Go to their 'p'refrences screen and view their 'l'abors.
Scroll down to "Farming, Etc" and hit enter. Is the labor entitled "Brewing" white or gray?

It shows me this:
Mining
Woodworking
Stoneworking
Hunting/Related
(half bold)Healthcare
(half bold)Farming/Related
(half bold)Fishing/Related
Metalsmith
Jewelry
Crafts
(half bold)Engineering
(full bold)Hualing
Other Jobs

Broo'in and Farmin' are under...er. Farming. Growing and Brewing respectively. You wont get any butchery shops up without a Butcher profession either.

Try de-selecting the job and then letting the game run for a tick, then reselecting it. Maybe they'll remember they're supposed to brew :)

I have had this issue before with mining labors, my second miner at the start of the game sometimes not remembering to mine even though I have 2 pickaxes and the labor activated on both of them.

Also just 'cause they're idle doesn't mean they're not busy... on break! ;)

Gotta respect the Dorf Union you know. Can't force a dorf to do nothin'!

Oh also a few other troubleshooting things to try:

Ensure the building material you used isn't out of reach of the dwarves ie: up a straight cliff without any way to get to it, or forbidden for some reason. Try using another material you know is like right next to the still. :)

Plus also I don't suggest having all 5 dwarves be brewers, though it's prolly not a big deal early on, them legendary ales will make any dwarf forget that their wife and children just died in a horrible yeti accident.

Perhaps you should go grab DwarfTherapist to manage all of the skills?

DF without therapist is like trying to calculate the square root of pi in your head.
On cocaine.

My son, many speak of the honor in war.
My preferred method is to wait until their back is turned, then impale them with a pike held by someone else.
Preferrably from a distance.

Welcome to dwarf fortress.

May Armok guide you through the menus of this little asylum simulator and back.

You will learn why you fear the night, learn why the trees are seen so lowly, and watch the countless slaughter of thousands of dwarves.

Welcome to dwarf fortress.

Little tip: In the future, when your forts are larger: If you have everything you need going, assign some dwarfs to the militia, you'll need 'em if you train and equip them properly. But that is not now.

Also, list of seemingly harmless creatures to fear: Keas, Hoary Marmots, ANYTHING WITH HOOVES, and Badgers.

And finally, you're all wimps, No Dwarf Therapist here.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.
