Has another Convent of Regency been called already?  Would that there could be a single force in the galaxy to be trusted with such authority, even the Imperial Guard itself.  Praise be to the Pancreator for blessing the Imperium with a bureaucracy so devoted to slavish worship of its instructions that no general could seize the Guard's for himself, at least before so poor nobleman gives him reason to act.

And so again, Hawkwood abstains, as does every House.  It could be called a gentleman's agreement, if any member could be called anything like gentle, and if the price of deviance were anything less than mutual destruction.  Perhaps, in another decade, another generation, another century, there might be reason enough to risk otherwise.

By the way, I was looking at the scoreboard.  Kebooo, where are you getting all those cities?  It never ceases to amaze me how terrible I am at 4X games for how much practice I've had at them.

I have my strategies. Keep in mind I've played this game since it was released, long, long ago. I feel as though I've pretty much come close to the min/max wall of the early game. But later on when there are so many cities, so many units, so many possibilities, that advantage goes away.

I'm just wondering how to build up 100 food and metal with the kind of frequency needed to expand like that.  Not to give too much away, but while I'm sure I'm not expanding as fast as I could be, I don't see how I could be growing all that much quicker.

I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere about hospitals' effect on unit healing rates, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Does anybody know how they work or can direct me to the source?

I honestly don't, except for a vague recollection of that being another mechanic that doesn't actually work as advertised.

I'd be interested to know too, I have a tank unit that hasn't healed a hitpoint in five turns of garrisoning.

I only found out that a unit in a city should heal 12% of its health, vs 2% outside.

Aqizzar, a lot of my city count is from conquering cities, not from engineers. I have probably built seven or eight cities from engineers.

This was a basic guide I wrote for the game a few years ago, some may find it useful, especially those new to the game: http://s235607088.onlinehome.us/EFS/

No mention of the hospital statistics, which I don't recall off the top of my head any longer. What I do know is that there is no benefit to building more than two. I may be wrong, but I believe they add either an additional 4% to healing per turn (an equal amount both in and out of cities) planet wide, or 10%. Something like that. I damage myself in doing so, but there is no reason not to build two hospitals on every world that you have a significant military presence.

Yeah, that's where most of my growth has been as well.  It's just that all the starting planets have about the same number of rebel cities and I'm already blitzing another planet while building engineers at home.  It seems like I'm growing about as fast as I could.

By the by, reading that guide: I assume we're all playing by the same interpretation of the Nova house rules, and nobody is abusing the AI?  Like, the complete tithe skimming thing?

I've never been in a game where everyone didn't raise the tithe, or else there is no purpose to churches and controlling them.

I hope this doesn't compromise me diplomatically, but I believe I control more than one city on six planets. I use frigates early in the game to land next to "lone" cities to discover if they are farms or mines. I will capture a farm first for a planet I'm attacking, then go after all the farms/mines that aren't in PTS range. I also will risk one of my nobles early in the game due to their effectiveness against the weak rebel stacks. Sometimes it bites me in the ass, but 95% of the time it is worth it. So I aggressively expand, take every mine/farm I can, and sell valuable resources (gems/exotica) that I won't use for a long time to the league so that I can purchase as much food and metal as I can. I suppose it can only make for more interesting games to divulge some of my secrets. Also, Decados starts with two air units which are extremely effective versus rebel garrisons guarding resource cities.

Also, it helps to be familiar with the resource "value" of hexes and terrain types. That way you know where you should be building mines/farms early on to maximize food/metal income.

You're supposed to raise the tithe to max under Nova rules, just not allowed to touch unit pay.

Yeah, like others said, this is actually recommended in the "notes on play" section of the nova webpage.
