Glad to see I'm spoken for.  Totally in, totally as House Hawkwood again.  Hawkwood 4 lyfe yo.  Or maybe not, I'm flexible.  And since I learned quite a few things about how the game actually works last time around, I shouldn't do as much stupid shit this time.

I'm cool for going with a mod, although I know nothing about either one.  I'll read up on them.  Ambivalent on the randomized map, since the random map tends to have some schizophrenic warp-gate layouts, but I can deal with that if everyone else wants it.

I forget how Rebellion and the Plague work, but I say we leave them on because that sounds awesome.  Let's make this a proper Machiavelli-inspired strategy game.  And Universal Warehouse off is fine by me.

It seems that people are okay with randomized maps.  I guess I'll volunteer to play Li Halan and generate a batch for everyone to pick from.  Sound good?

With mainiac taking Li Halan(again! How am I supposed to not get prejudiced here?) we'll have the following player-house distribution:
Li Halan - mainiac
Hazat - I'll take them, since they're not getting enough love
Decados - ?
Hawkwood - Aqizzar

Al-Malik - RedKing/Keboo - you guys decide who gets them and the other one will get Decados.

But Il Palazzo, I always thought of you as representing all the wonder that Decados represents!

Redking: Check out the Hazat portraits and homeworld!  They cool, you know?

Yup, that is the Il Palazzo we all know and love.  Nobody can match him in these qualities!

I said I would generate a batch of randomized maps but I forgot you can't save mid turn in secure PBEM games.  I don't really feel like playing through the first turn a bunch of times until we get a map we all like.  So does someone else want to take Li Halan?

As a devoted spectator, I suggest a third option: You guys should play the Escape from Earth mod.  It's awesome, and it has random worlds built in.

We could do that.

I'll take Decados.

I think engineers are expensive enough. The problem is that it becomes virtually impossible to siege another world if you don't have decent fleets to ferry troops in. And you won't have those if you don't have the resources to create them, resources generated by manufacturing cities. It would take an entire re-balancing of the units to change this. I've messed around with really trying to get a great re-balancing of EFS (while maintaining the interesting direct vs armor and close vs infantry dynamic Nova got rid of), but eventually gave up due to the lack of general interest in the game when I was doing it. Hyperion uses various formulas to determine unit "value", and Nova is allegedly balanced, but I have my reservations about whether this is actually accomplished in practice.

I like plague on. One of the rules we'll be following is to not intentionally starve your cities. But I'd be ok with allowing even that. EFS really starts to see unit creep, where you have a ton of units on every world that make invasions prohibitively difficult. Starvation and plague leads to destruction. Destruction is good.

As for rebellion, I'm not sure. On random worlds, rebel units are at 0% loyalty. This means any you capture will rebel against you. I don't think it's a big deal either way.

One possible solution to mainiac's dilemma is having us all skip our first turn. We could all agree to take absolutely zero action on any screen, for any reason. I don't see any harm in this and it would allow him to show us a bunch of maps for us to decide on.

That is a good plan.  I will generate a bunch of maps at rehearsal tonight while I sit there and watch someone else do the lightboard (yay redundancy!).  Expect me to post them around 11:00 P.M. US eastern time.

Be sure to set the plague and rebellion on, as the majority appears to like these.

This randomizer is balls.   Not one passable map  yet.
How do I screenshot?

I randomized a bunch of maps and they were uniformly balls, jump gates past stigmatia, ridiculously unfair starting positions, etc.  Does someone else want a try?  Or could we try my idea before where we pick the planet locations and the jump gates and then randomize the surface of the planets?

I'll give it a try...is it ok if I decide what your password is? I think we'll all want to give out our password to another player anyway. For a truly fair map, it usually takes a good 30 tries or so, and double that if you're unlucky.

I guess I'd need to know what traits you wanted as well.

As for screenshots, it's ctrl + shift + ~ key. This puts SCREEN.PCX in the EFS directory. It'll overwrite anything with that name. I use IrfanView to convert the PCX file to something else.
