Quote from: Lord Aqizzar
words, words, words
My friend, the truth is, you have abused the trust we had once placed in you in ways beyond count. Most notably, by usurping the crown, but also by racist remarks towards the Vau convertites serving the humankind humbly, as Pancreator preordained. That you have decided to strike in the wake of my following your request to remove both my warships and my land forces, was too villainous a crime to even comment on. It pains me to witness how little is left of the famed Hawkwood honour.
Your actions have rarely followed your words, and your command of the Fleet had been wanting at best. Many a time a crisis called for action, for the iron fist of the Fleet backed by the will of the noble houses, to punish the transgressions against the Imperial Law. Yet, you have never acted beyond erecting elaborate smoke screens. Your extreme dedication towards keeping the warships of your ministry out of harms way was enough of an indication that you covet the power of their fusion cannons to be used for your own designs.
And so, it is with little surprise that we see your declaration of hostilities on the eve of the upcoming elections. In your heart, you always craved the throne for yourself. The years of regency must have imbued your soul with the desire to rule over your peers as if you were our better.
We shall oppose your unlawful claims with all of our might, and may the Pancreator help us all if we fail.

Farewell, friend. We shall meet again on the field of battle.

-Lazarus

((Nice one, Aquizzer. I did leave myself wide open(or at least more than I should) this turn. I was hoping, naively, you'd wait a turn more.
Oh, by the way, I always wanted to use this corruption of your name, should you ever manage to piss me off. This hardly qualifies, but it's as close as it'll ever get, I suppose.

One more thing, the last couple of PMs from you guys seem to indicate that there might be a bit of confusion as to the state of affairs regarding the game mechanics and the upcoming election, so here's a breakdown/clarification:

The election is on the turn 63(in two years time, three for Margrave), and it is NOT the final one, should Aqizzar win. But it is the one that would officially declare him the Pretender, after which we'd have ten years to sort him out, ahem, diplomatically.
If he draws, the sad state of affairs continues on as it had for the past twenty years or so.
If he loses, combat on Byzantium becomes prohibited again, and remains as such until another claimant resurfaces.

Important
Remember the rule 29, as it weighs most heavily on wheteher you might win or lose:
Quote
A noble may not vote unless he has been on the surface of Byzantium continuously since the previous election. He is banned from voting even if he took off and landed again in the same turn. If a noble is allowed to stay in orbit or jump around the surface of Byzantium, it's too easy for him to avoid assassins. You can consider this rule to be a statute of the Imperial constitution.

My fellow Lords and Ladies, I grow ever more wary and resentful of the situation that has clouded the skies of the core worlds. While it is clear that peace cannot be brokered without countless numbers of innocents dying on all sides, it is not this that most vexes me.

I am furious, no the word I seek may not adequately convey my disgust and hatred upon receiving a report from one of my agents when he presented to me undeniable proof of one Noble Lord consorting with alien powers. You may think I speak of the Vau, while incredibly unorthodox in of itself it pales compared to the vile trafficking that the Hazat have debased themselves too.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

SYMBIOTS! You harbor the Demons of Stigmata, the greatest threat we have ever faced on the very Capitol!

What more do you hide in your fortified grounds, in the labs and dungeons of the Eye compound, in the depths of Byzantium itself? I only censor Lord Lazarus' remaining troops out of respect for the long peace that we have held between us.

But I demand an explanation. I am on the verge of unleashing the entirety of the Stigmata Garrison to Byzantium to scour this menace from the Throne of the Empire. Tell me that my agent is wrong Lazarus, tell me that this beast is an aberration that will be destroyed as soon as you receive this announcement.

Reassure me my Lord Hazat, that you are not an Enemy of Humanity.

Il Palazzo, how exactly did you know where to look for the space station that I hid in the middle of nowhere on the far side of the planet from your troops?

I'm pretty sure if he had spotted it before, at any point, as long as it stays in that system, it's spotted, because it hasn't actually "moved" between hexes, it seems launching to and from space does not change spotting. Or else you could attack, attack, land, and every turn relaunch and have that +3 unspotted bonus. I had assumed that's why you were able to bomb one of my freighters that I had in the middle of nowhere back in the battle of Cadavus. I learned my lesson.

Hmm, or not, I can't seem to reproduce it in single player. I remember seeing one of your freighters where I didn't have spotting on Tethys, though. So I'm not sure what happened there.

I was able to bomb your freighters because I was doing systematic bombardment to get at your light artillery.  I found the freighters by accident.

The attack relaunch strategy wouldn't work because units would get seen when they move into orbit, AFAIK.

Maybe he employs ex-Rebel Fighter Pilots?  :P

He seems to employ everyone else, so why not?  ;D

I shipped in some extra scouting muscle that turn specifically for that purpose, and then tried to guess where would I land the station if I were in your situation.
Give us some credit, would ya?

@Margrave:
I'm no more an enemy of humanity than any other of the houses breeding and capturing symbiot warbeasts, and that's a majority, if not all of us. I believe this particular can of worms had been opened back when the Decados family first started dwindling, so you're a bit late with your outrage.

Right, but these ones I had had sitting outside of a city, though I think it was only about three hexes outside of one. The freighter of yours I saw was close by a city even though I didn't have any spotters near it on Tethys.

It's surprising that you were able to read my mind considering that I selected that site randomly from a list.  My goddamn luck.

I must be thinking of a different incident.  Got a turn number?

"What is the nature of this urgent inquiry of yours."
"I wish to know if you can gather the funds for a large transaction."
The man across the table grinned at Lady Dragana Li Halan.  Perhaps she didn't understand the realities of the geopolitical situation having so recently seceded her uncle for house leadership.
"My Lady, I am a guild ambassador.  I represent the full wealth of Leagueheim.  We are the lifeblood of galactic currency.  Whatever amount you need, I assure you can be supplied in short order."
"Excellent then.  We wish to make a sale to the tune of three hundred thousand firebirds."
The guildman sat silently, blood pounding through his veins.  One did not get to his high position in life without a fine appreciation for the value of money and no guildman had ever before been tempted with such a stun.  By the Pancreator, the commission on this would be...  He blinked suddenly and forced himself to the very lucrative matter at hand.
"You... can supply that magnitude of goods?  The guild does not frequently deal in the buy or sale of planets." he weakly joked.
In reply Dragana silently took a small slip of paper from the folder in front of her and slid it across the table to the guildman.  He intensely scruitinized the paper.  The list was short but the quantities of precious commodities were such as hadn't been traded since the days of Vladimir.
"This is somewhat approximate at this time.  But I wish for you to understand the magnitude of the transaction that I am requesting." Dragana paused to let the man finish reading, eyeing him prospectively the whole while.  "Is this within your operating budget?"
To his credit the guildman was keeping his cool quite well.  He slipped the paper into his own briefcase and pondered for a moment.
"The amount you specified does exceed our operating budget by a fair amount, M'Lady.  It will take us a short while to gather the necessary funds from the lesser guild treasuries.  You may have your funds in a week."
"I must say I am quite impressed.  I was told this is three times the value of the Leagueheim treasury."
The guildman perked up ever so slightly, pride easily slipping into a mind jarred by the earlier shock.  "Well, M'Lady, we are the guild after all.  But why do you need such an immense quantity of firebirds?"
Lady Dragana gave sigh and paused for a moment before replying with a philosophical muse.  "My late uncle Flavius once told me of a philosopher from Holy Terra.  The man said 'All the treasures of earth will rot away before the ravages of time.  Store your treasure in heaven, where no robber may steal it and no war may destroy it.'  These words ring true to me, the rapacious Hazzat brigands come with theft in their eyes for everything.  But the Pancreator, it seems, is not willing to offer me a credit line for three hundred thousand firebirds.  It seems that the guild is as close to heaven as I can get in this world."

Cheers, this one's fine.

I'll post some words tomorrow, as it's 3AM here already. Let me just say that this game sure gives the edge to the attacker.

Ah, my dear Lazarus. Who would have expected you to be such a conniving traitor to humanity? I will admit, the killing of Hawkwood nobles is a crime long past being considered unscrupulous. But stealing the scepters of another house and occupying the palace of their homeworld? You have spit upon Vladimir's legacy, and in doing so, have made yourself enemy of the galaxy. Repent now and undo your crimes and your lineage might be allowed to continue on in some meager fashion. Continue with your schemes and you will be ejected from Byzantium, nevermore to return. Surely you cannot expect to fight every house? I grant that two relics are indeed a mighty weapon, but not nearly enough to stop four houses. Have you truly chosen the path of death and destruction for your people?
