---------------

The "mainiac" lord Flavius gave a howl of rage as he saw the image on his screen.  Desperately he shoved his computer mouse around trying to change what he saw.  But it was no use.  The batteries were dead.  First his strategy software crashed, forcing him to replan the years logistics again, now this.

The palace was searched high and low for more batteries but none were to be found.  So Lord Flavius gave up and went down to the agora to buy some more.  Along the way he stopped for some Holy Terran food.  He heard that on Holy Terra they just called it "Holy food".

One is, I don't give a shit about your war with Kebooo, and I never did.  I didn't help you at Cadavus because I literally could not.  Kebooo attacked you before any Fleet craft that could have done a damn thing got there, and after they got there they frequently couldn't spot anything to attack.  You can keep calling me a liar all you want, but I'm not going to care.

I'm not saying it for your benefit.  But it's pretty obvious there was a lot you could do, as I explained at the time.  It was completely in your power to set up a blockade.

Second thing is, I'm not making a move against you, I was just fucking tired of seeing your Noble-killer stack hanging around next to my area and I was long since tired of asking politely for you to at least keep up a modicum of not being poised to attack me.  How would you feel if another player had three Assassins hanging around next to your Fort turn after turn?  Yeah I thought so.

I would feel pretty meh about it since my noble is protected against assasins, as is yours.  Now could you please tell me when exactly you asked politely?  Contrary to Decados propoganda I am not a mind reading witch.

Clouds are gathering over Byzantium...
Oh, wait. That's just some ships.

Results:

DNA assault legions mop the floor with Xyll warbeasts and Cybercorps as expected (and this is with both of the latter started completely unspotted). I really think DNA legions simply have no counter.
I've done my own test. Both sides had nobles with the battlemaster trait.

Unspottet cybercorps and unspotted warbeasts win once in a blue moon(maybe 10%), with or without nobles. The beasts generally do much less damage than cybercorps, even more so without nobles.
Mastiff tanks win 4 out of 5 fights, with or without nobles in stack.

Of course, this assumed full stacks. Let's not forget that one can churn out cybercorps much more cheaply, and warbeasts much more quickly than DNA legions.
Additionally, while good for defence and concentrated assaults, DNA legions lose in the mobility department.

Still, the tanks is the shit, but of course, they're vulnerable to bombardment.

Also, dopplegangers with the battlemaster in stack tend to win with 50% losses, and lose without the noble.

Also, also, unspotted morph divebombers(no noble) attacking DNA legions(+battlemaster) win 2 out of three fights. More precisely, they tend to lose(retreat) the first round, but then finish off whatever's left(i.e., they do lose on defence).

I even tried pure artillery(violator or pestulator) stacks, but it's just as hopeless as it sounds, even with the relics.

(I think I've just increased the global production of mastiff tanks by a few hundred percent)

The tanks and bombers are really the only units that can effectively stand up or win against them. But the bombers are tremendously expensive and have to refuel, and the tanks are more costly in energy/trace and can be bombarded by what will eventually be a dreadnought filled galaxy. The warbeasts are also more expensive. Cybercorps are pretty cheap but take 6 turns in a hospital and rely on being unspotted, which probably won't be the case when we have spy planes lurking about. I think all of the above units have their place and role, but DNA assault legions should make up the large majority of your forces, unless you are exotica starved.

Just to prove you wrong I'll build all my armies out of mastiffs and cybercorps.

Armed with the lessons of the war with Decados, I find this discussion of mastiff tanks and cybercorps to be quite amusing.

Personally, I've found Close Combat Tanks to be pretty dang useful against Ruins stacks.  With some artillery backup, they mow right through Symbiots.

I've done my best to put Unit pay back at the center, but I won't know if I got it right until the next turn.  I honestly thought everyone was turning up Unit Pay, since I never saw any officers in other player's stacks and everyone said to go ahead and max your Tithe Skimming.  One's just as much an effectively free bonus as the other, just the same as setting taxation low enough to have 100% city loyalty at all times.

For me officers were just a bit too expensive at the beginning of the game to warrant making them. 3 turns to build and 20 electronics went a long way to building more useful units like spies, tanks and spaceships.

Over time I've just gotten used to not having them on hand. Here and there in places I'll have some stashed, Midian especially and worlds that had lots of ruins.

Raising unit pay + an officer would make your stack immune to route, though. And it would effectively discourage use of officers. I haven't had many stacks that warrant their use, but I do have a few of them lingering about.

And naturally I was just throwing my nobles around like a gunslinger.

I'd like to remind everybody to make sure they leave their grounded transports unloaded. This is as per house rules - not doing so makes the stack immune to attack(supposedly).

Once again, sorry for the delay.  Turn sent.

Hmm...  Do I demand reconciliation of another player for moving powerful military forces into my terrain, thereby revealing that I have my own forces scouting their terrain?  Ah the eternal question of espionage, how much of the hand do you have to show to make your point without giving up the game.

Why, it's dangerous enough to start a war over.
