Sounds good to me. I'm more of a builder than a fighter, so having a little more breathing room down there will be nice.
Although....I just noticed that Li Halan and Hawkwood will have a decisive stranglehold on routes of approach to Byzantium II. Hopefully they won't charge too high of a toll on food shipments to feed my nobles in the Imperial Palace (or we'll just buy from the League all the time).

But then the Symbiotes would gain the craftiness of mainiac!  You'd all be doomed!

But that would mean that mainiac wouldn't win.. maybe.

Holy crap, lost some time there.

I vote for map #3.  All the House planets are roughly equidistant with room to expand, Leagueheim is somewhat centrally located for maximum resupply chances (as opposed to #5 where its stuck off in a corner), and most parts of the galaxy are relatively accessible from anywhere without any big separate arms.

Y'know, in all the times I've played the game, I don't think I've ever seen the Symbiotes actually do anything, except gobble up a bunch of towns for the first dozen turns.

In the light of Aqizzar's dissent, I've added a poll.
Choose the maps you'd be o.k. with playing on. The first one to get five votes wins.

Non-players, please do not vote.

It might be better if you recieved the votes via PM.  There is always going to be one spectator that can't refuse an open poll, or just doesn't realize they shouldn't vote (despite whatever warnings you might give).

I don't think that'll be necessary. The four votes cast so far show quite clearly that only the map #5 has got the support of most of the players. The remaining ones have barely registered.
I suppose we will either have Aqizzar consent to playing on #5, or regenerate the maps.
Right now I'm assuming the former, and sending the empty turn forward to Keboo.

edit: Hazat traits - Despotism[-4], Insanity[-4], Enlightened Nobility[+1], Administration[+1], Warrior Ethic[+3], Battlemaster[+2], Physics docs[+1].

I wanted to go for a merchant empire at first, but with the League so far away I had to change my mind. Instead we're some sort of Third Reich.

Okay, I obviously missed out on quite a bit of talking.  What's this about points?  And mods and patches or something?  Someone bring me up to speed here, I don't see a post where a particular mod was decided on and linked to.

I never cease to be amazed that for all the early-to-mid 90s games out there that absolutely refuse to run in modern Windows, especially 64x and 86x Windows, fucking Emperor of the Fading Suns works perfectly fine, sound included, with nothing but Compatibility Mode switched on.

We're doing the same setup as in that old game we had. I've updated the OP accordingly.

So Nova over whatever was the latest version of the game. If uncertain, get the one I sent you in the PM a while ago, which is probably patched already(but still, just to be sure, run the "patch" and "dat_something" files first).

You can find a link to Nova in the OP.

There's a link to "Nova house rules" there as well, which are, as you might remember, the same "no cheating" rules we used last time.
On that site, there's a "trait balancing system" as well:
http://website.lineone.net/~rwein/nova/traits.htm

It seems that we're going with 0 starting points, so if you want any positive traits, you'll have to take some negative ones first.

Remember not to do anything on your first turn, apart from chosing technology research.

Yikes, okay yeah that's pretty important.  EDIT: Well, it's almost mathematically impossible to take Noblesse Oblige, so there goes my "we're the good guys wink wink" build.

Although I can't run the Patch utility, since it's a 32x program.  Someday I'm going to pin down a Microsoft executive and ask him why the fuck Windows isn't backwards compatible with its own damn architecture.

Yeah, the game keeps giving me messages about mismatched game data.  If that's not supposed to be happening, then can someone do me the favor of just zipping up your game folder?  Because I cannot patch this thing with the way Windows 7 works.

I have not run the patch yet either.  Hope that's not a problem.

Which version of the game are you using? The zip file I had uploaded is 1.4 vanilla EFS. You shouldn't ever have to run a patch for it.

But since we're playing Nova, you have to get the Nova mod and unzip it to the EFS directory: http://website.lineone.net/~rwein/nova/download.htm

Never play your turn with mismatched game data, that means you're basically playing the game with different stats and rules.
