Useless containers?
« on: October 14, 2012, 12:42:02 am »

So are all containers besides backpacks and quivers completely useless?

backpacks: auto-store everything you pick up, have infinite capacity and can be worn and removed to sort the things you pick
quiver: auto-store bolts/arrows you pick up, limited capacity, but you can simply wear many to sort your projectiles.
waterskins: what's the point? they only store 3 drinks, can be worn but to what end? it's not like you auto-store any liquid you pick up on them. It seems better to use a pouch or a bag for your drinks...
pouch: if only these could be worn and auto-store all the coins you pick-up, but noooo... what's the point on having these? besides as a bigger waterskin replacement.
bags: the same as pouches, only that store more liquid, and maybe to sort some important items you want to keep
bowls: like the above, if they could auto-store food would be awesome...
coffers/chests/coffins/barrels/bins, too heavy bags...

what you guys think? am I missing something?

That's substantially correct I think.  In order to improve this situation, Toady will have to implement more realism, like a waterproof tag.  Most realistic backpacks wouldn't hold water too well.  :)

As for smaller bags and pouches, I guess he'd have to implement more realistic inventory management, such as taking longer to search through larger bags, which could be a hassle in combat.

Inventory management is already a hassle, I guess what he could do to improve it is to add more auto-store features to containers, so you can wear backpacks, waterskins, quivers, pouches, and bags, and have certain kind of items automatically go to each one, like it's done with quivers and arrows/bolts, liquids to waterskisns, coins to pouches, etc... maybe even have a system where you can tell the container what's going to store, like this "sheep wool bag" is going to store "food", and this "llama wool bag" is going to store "large daggers" and so on...

That... would be really useful.

I also like the idea of it taking time to search through larger bags. Maybe would also be good to add some size limitations, so I can't carry five +microcline coffer+s in my backpack all laden with weapons and armour.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

I don't see what's bad about it, a wandering vagabond exploring adventurer dude is more likely to have a backpack to put things in, then lug around a barrel and a granite coffer, ect.

The waterproof tag might be a good idea, though, but then again, leather bags and quivers and stone bins and coffers could conceivably hold water too. If you lost your waterskin, you'd probably improvise by carrying river water in your quiver and players would probably complain if they could not do that.

Inventory might need to factor in bulk in addition to weight. Small pony kegs vs waterskins and whatnot.

Yeah, the bulk factor was pretty much what I meant by saying "size limitations".

right now it gets ridiculous, you can carry 3 backpacks inside your worn backpack, and can have several corpses, coffers, barrels, bins, and what not inside each of those...

Of course fixing it to realistic levels would make it impossible to hoard loot from dungeons, etc.... maybe if you were able to have beasts of burden/minecarts/wagons where you could put stuff, move them a bit, "park" them somewhere safe, clean another room, hoard the stuff to your "vehicle" and when you're done, move on with your "caravan" of sorts...

I think something similar is being added in the next version, with the ability to get animals for yourself. Maybe we'll be able to use draft animals for that purpose?

Maybe - I don't read Future of the Fortress. But it's definitely on his devlog.

Take that log with a grain of salt, it will probably take some years before he has done most of that. Also while dwarf fortress is a supreme game, it has some really annoying bugs and the more he stuffs in it the more the fps seems to get drained so at some point he will probably have to sit down and hammer the bugs out.

Yeah, I don't think we're going to see any changes to any of this in the next version of DF, unless Toady happens across a tangent there while improving the various sites and continued history after worldgen.  Seems unlikely to me.

I'm actually a tad surprised that this didn't get addressed with .34.x though.  A number of fort mode containers were adjusted then, and it seemed like a perfect time to make adjustments to containers in general.  Perhaps he decided that it wouldn't be fun if you were limited in such a way in adventure mode, and plans to come back to it at a future date.

For one reason or another, I think that once Fortress mode skills are implemented (and therefore: building and the like) the inventory management will probably be a little bit less convenient than it is now.
(not like it's convenient to begin with, though)

I think this is in the wrong board. If you want this considered. Add it to the DF Suggestion board.

The OP fitted this board, but I think I derailed it.
