I like swords, they are versatile and aeffective. Additionaly, with a sum of patience, you can get one of those swords. I've heard about whips being overpowered, but it never seemed so for me in adventure mode

Honestly, wandering the caverns for half a dozen hours isn't worth getting one of those swords. I used to have the same attitude and pick swordsman every time in the hopes that I could acquire the best weapon in the game, but after doing it once I realize it just isn't worth it.

Dual wielding a sword and a greataxe.

Swordsman. The stabby of a spear, combined with the choppy of an axe. In terms of sheer effectiveness though, spearmen have always gotten the highest kill totals for me, mostly due to lucky jabs in the throat or heart.

Steel picks. Those things can do some mighty brutal stuff. My most recent adventure in Masterwork bisected a goblin pyromancer-dark-sorceror with a impaling through the groin.

The Dwarf of the Legion Pyromancer impales the Goblin Pyromancer Overlord in the groin and the severed part sails off in an arc!
The goblin Pyromancer has been struck down.

It was quite satisfying. This prick would not die otherwise. He just kept cursing me and trying to roast me to death despite him losing both arms and my reading the tablets he dropped. By the time I was done I was literally rotting all over my body and numb, yet still alive, breathing fire, and pretty pissed at anything in the vicinity.

When first starting out though I go for spears or axes, really.  Large Daggers seem to be quite effective too. Swords are versatile, yes, but it just seems boring to me.

I wish I had the time to actually get a good weapon and stick with it, but it's like my adventurers are all cursed or something.

If I have to choose MAYBE dying to wolves, giant dingos or bandits and CERTAINLY dying to boogeymen if my squaddies get whacked, I'll take the bandits and critters.
