Update 1: Just Starting OutCommander's Log, March 1stOperation Blinding HydraApparently there was a small, unofficial scuffle between XCOM personnel and alien forces before operations officially commenced. From what I hear, it mainly consisted of a pair of sectoids bursting into a convenience store and eating reaction fire from the soldiers in question, followed by two more joining in and having a very unsuccessful shootout.
Well, more corpses for us, I suppose.
Construction PrioritiesIn any case, it's time to review our current status.
My first instinct is to produce another satellite uplink to expand our coverage (and more importantly, our funding), along with a workshop to give us some much-needed engineers. However, there's a slight problem- the current uplink is on the side with the officer training school and the steam vent. If I keep building them over there, I risk not having enough space for an efficient power complex, and I'd probably have to move the training school.
The alternative, of course, is to build it on the other side, in which case either one of my uplink facilities would be out of place or I'd have to remove and replace that instead.
A difficult decision, assuming that's what I decide to do in the first place.
As for the rest, we've begun research on Xeno Biology and constructed two medkits. I'm sure some are going to object to not getting more practical results out there, but I find a good base is essential to our more mundane efforts. Not sure who would object to medkits, but I'm sure they're out there.
Current RosterSo while pondering that, it's time to meet the recruits.
Apparently one of the ones involved in that little scuffle, where she spent most of it at a distance from the building firing at the service counter.
Another of those involved in the skirmish. I believe he spent most of it in a flanking maneuver that didn't quite work out.
Not entirely certain where to begin here. I suppose my first question is what is up with all these soldiers wearing helmets? You'd think we were in a war or something.
Standard, perfectly normal soldier with a regulation haircut. Good to see some normalcy in here.
Apparently they've sent me a combat robot. Why it was involved in an unofficial runin I can't say (peer pressure perhaps?), but I believe it was one of the frontliners in that conflict.
Another standard soldier.
I'd say a standard soldier but she was chewing on a cigar. That bodes either really well or really poorly.

Incidentally, there were a surprising number of difficulties fitting everyone in. Egypt is the only Middle Eastern country in XCOM, and he was a sniper. There were no male Americans, and in fact I think we're out of non-sniper male soldiers altogether. EDIT: Also Janna was not Nydus' original first name, I replaced it thinking I was supposed to and then blanked on what that name used to be. I think it was close, though...
As a reminder, anything except nationality (flag, not skin color or similar), gender, and class may be changed at any time (well, not on mission, but you get the idea).
As another reminder, we can purchase new recruits, but 10 credits apiece adds up, so there may be some limit or delay on that.
Finally, if you're not pleased with your class, or otherwise just want to start over, you may do so by going back on the waiting list. Assuming you want to keep the same character, your old one will be renamed Blanky McNoFace or similar and left as a candidate for other people to snatch up, or possibly just as someone for doing jobs nobody else wants to, while you'll get a fresh rookie (or existing blank, if one is available and you'd prefer that) as soon as one becomes available. This means that there's no surefire way to avoid the curse of not being what class you want, but you can always keep trying, if slowly.
