and Nydus opens fire on the other, misses, and keeps on shooting. It doesn't get so lucky the second time.
If you miss the first time... shoot more bullets.

Update 5 on an XCOM LP and no rookie deaths? You should be ashamed.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

You call a single rookie a death? I was talking about a BRACE OF ROOKIES! The only way to stop the aliens is to choke them to death with the dead!

If you want more deaths you could always request to have Irony have you charge blindly.

Update 6: Pokeball

April 1st

Our first monthly report goes up. I don't mean to brag, but give me a moment while I brag about how awesome we are.

Just pay no mind to Argentina, United Kingdom, Mexico, or China prior to their satellite going up. Everything's fine, guys. Those abductions are probably like 0.1% of your total population.

We've also researched nanoweave vests and SCOPES, augments that increase a soldier's survivability and accuracy, respectively. The autopsy on the Thin Man is completed, giving us insight into their unique physiology, and our alien containment facility is completed. Mwahahahaha.

I also order more excavations, a third lift, and a temporary power plant.

I also remembered to launch our reserve satellite prior to the month's end. It was a difficult decision, but I ultimately went with China, as they were rather uneasy [3 bars], and offered both respectable cash incentives and two precious engineers per month.

April 6th
UFO-2 is noticed, intercepted, and shot down over Nigeria. Darkmoon, Rapingshire, Eoxis, and a new recruit by the name of Bunny are sent to investigate.

Spoiler: This is Bunny (click to show/hide)

Rapingshire is also forced to hand over her medkit to Eoxis in exchange for an arc thrower. She'll be fine.

Operation Dark God

The crash site is a forest with visible flames in the distance. The squad begins moving slowly towards where we assume the crash to be.

Eoxis thinks he hears something from the right, however, which forces a change of plans.

Suddenly, two thin men dash out to their left. Several people take shots, but only one (Darkmoon, I think) hits, and fails to put it down. They then dash into cover in a flanking position, forcing our team to scramble.

Bob Bunny rushed up to a ledge and opens fire, killing the uninjured thin man with his first volley. We're now down to one critically wounded thin man. This should be easy.

...but we do need one alive...

...

...

I have Eoxis throw down his smoke grenade, while Rapingshire dashes up and huddles down against a ledge. Unfortunately the thin man is smarter or more cowardly than it looks, and it runs off. Should have just shot the thing.

Rapingshire then moves up, regains sight of it, and corrects that error.

Eoxis thinks he hears stuff from the left now, so the squad begins moving that direction. Unfortunately cover's extremely sparse, so they make do with being ready to fire.

Rapingshire then hears something from inside the ship, and sure enough, aliens soon emerge. They're like nothing we've ever seen before, apparently flying cyborgs of some sort. One takes cover behind the doorway of the ship, while the other moves behind some wreckage in front of it. Say, Rapingshire could reach that one...

Darkmoon fires at the one in the ship, but misses. Bunny moves up to a log and takes shots at the closer one with his pistol, but misses anyway. Eoxis follows suit but pings it lightly. Good enough!

Rapingshire then moves on up, taking cover behind the larger chunk of scrap the new alien itself is hiding behind, and zaps the beast. Success! It falls to the ground stunned.

The remaining creature fires at Bob, but misses by a wide margin.

Rapingshire moves up to the UFO wall to capture that one too, under strong protests for some reason, and notices a strange alien materialize in the ship. It's apparently made almost entirely of energy... and takes cover behind the same doorway as the cyborg.

Bunny and Eoxis both fire at the flier with their pistols, but fail to make any progress. Darkmoon whistles while hefting a grenade in one hand, then throws it into the doorway. Unfortunately, that only kills the energy being- in her attempt to miss Rapingshire, she apparently spared the alien as well. Furthermore, Rapingshire loses sight of the creature, perhaps obscured by the thick smoke. [More likely, a bug].

She waits for it to show itself, but the lack of movement throws her off- it simply blasts her from out of the cloud, gravely wounding her. [2 hp remaining]. Someone dings it with their pistol, and she successfully zaps this one as well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Eeeexcellent.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Rapingshire receives a very well-earned promotion, as well as my full enthusiasm should she require anything else. Bob Bunny also receives a well-earned promotion. That was some nice shooting, Bunny.

Rapinshire Levelup Options
Tactical Sense: +5 Defense per enemy in sight (max +20)
Aggression: +10% crit chance per enemy in sight (max +30%)

Our new guests come with intact light plasma rifles, interestingly enough. I go so far as to redirect our current efforts ("experimental warfare," whatever that's supposed to mean) towards interrogating them.

However, our lead researcher has noted a problem- we're low on scientists. Apparently we just don't have enough to properly accomplish our current endeavors in reasonable timeframes. I'll have to see about getting more sometime.

Oh yes, and please do mention if you have any preferences for your loadout. I know a few people expressed them back when we didn't have access to them.

Current Gear:
Grenades
Medikits
SCOPES (+10 Aim)
Nano-Fiber Vests (+2 hp)
Arc Thrower (capture LIVE ALIENS! Yaaaaaaay!)

Like I said, I prefer bonus armors. So Nano-Fiber Vests and Chitin Plate if you get some.

Also, surely sooner or later you will decide to let me get a kill right? I'm the only squaddie without a single kill to his name. :P

Update 7: Air Support

April 7th
Work is completed on some things, and so begins on another satellite uplink. I'm almost tempted to build another workshop instead, but the benefits of additional satellites can't be overstated.

Unfortunately, we also receive word of abductions in progress, in Brazil, Australia, and France. This makes for a difficult decision, as both Argentina and United Kingdom are rather nervous right now- strictly speaking, I don't think we can afford to ignore either one.

Alas, we've got no choice, so I go with Argentina based on gut. Hopefully ignoring the more densely populated continents won't have repercussions beyond United Kingdom going berserk...

This mission is also estimated to be difficult, as opposed to the other two sites which were gauged at moderate difficulty. Hopefully that means we're interfering with their strongest section and not just making a horrible mistake on risk and reward.

Nydus is called up to lead the team. I want Darkmoon as well, but can't justify sending her on two missions in a row. Armok and Kirk are called in instead, as well as Ran'dum, our new recruit.

Operation Driving Flame

Hm, this looks strangely familiar somehow... well, no matter.

The squad advances slowly, seeing nothing for a ways, before suddenly noticing sectoids. lots of them. They scamper about, most retreating further but one skittering behind a motorcycle up ahead. The squad opens fire but can't hit it, and it soon receives an overcharge from one of its friends.

Two more scurry back into view, taking cover behind a taxi, and all three open fire on Nydus. She's fine, though a van behind her explodes under the onslaught.

I also... notice things in the distance. They haven't spotted us yet, but uh oh.

The rookie manages to wound the sectoid, giving me the idea to cap- just kidding! No, we're not capturing it. In fact, Armok moves to the other side of her van and finally gets a clear shot, killing it.

The remaining sectoids scamper about, one receiving an overcharge then fleeing, the other moving behind a police car and waiting for someone to make a move. Our flying cyborg friends move around but still don't engage. Maybe they think sectoids are stupid and panic over nothing.

Nydus manages to nail the sectoid behind the cop car, then reloads. The rest of the squad follows suit, banking on nothing coming out of the darkness. Nothing does, and they resume trying to advance a bit.

Unfortunately this just reveals thin men and brief sightings of the sectoids. The cop car they're hiding behind is soon on fire, forcing everyone to pull back. One poisons Nydus and the other wounds Kirk soon after. Ran'dum moves through the poison cloud trying to pull back even further, however, leaving us with two poisoned, one injured, and one medkit.

Kirk and Ran'dum then complicate matters by panicking. Kirk hunkers down, Ran'dum fires at the thin man but misses. Nydus fires at the thin man continuously but fails to connect, and Armok, unable to decide who needs medical attention the most, pulls back to her van and opens fire on the thin man, now in the open from her vantage point, killing it.

Plasma fire then streaks out from an unseen attacker, wounding Ran'dum further. He's okay though.

Then the car everyone was hiding behind explodes, killing Kirk and Ran'dum instantly and knocking Nydus to critical condition.

It wasn't even on fire.

Armok moves in to stabilize Nydus, but is soon left with a grim decision. She can certainly hoof it to the Skyranger, but she can't drag Nydus with her in the process [BS >:(]. On the other hand... at least one thin man, two floaters, and, oh, let's say three sectoids lurk in yonder darkness.

Deciding to at least try, she lies in wait for something to emerge. Soon enough, a thin man darts across the street, and she fires but misses. It returns fire, also ineffectually, before she scuttles to the other side of the car and blows it away.

Well... now it's just three sectoids and two cyborgs. At a minimum.

She lies in wait, and an overcharged sectoid scurries out of the darkness, weathers a missed shot, and scurries right back in. It then does it a second time, after a little while, and so Armok decides she can afford to advance out of cover a bit, reload, and then advance to the blackened car in front of her to take a shot.

Unfortunately, the overcharges sectoid was doing some lying in wait of his own, and hit Armok [2]. Even more unfortunately, this finally woke up those two cyborgs from before.

Deciding that she can't run far enough to get to cover or outrange her opponents, she throws down a smoke grenade and hopes for the best.

"The best" is not quite good enough. The sectoid fires are her and misses, but one cyborg flies into the sky and returns to cut her off, while the other tries to pin her down with fire.

Things are grim. If she runs for it, she'll probably be gunned down by all three of them. If she moves behind the ruined husk of a car and point-blanks that floater, the overcharged sectoid will definitely gun her down and the suppressing one might.

TO BE CONTINUED...

Aww, Ravenna didn't get promoted! And she has the most kills, too...

Ah, well. At least she has the most kills.

The current situation looks grim. No matter what this looks like our first lost mission.

I'm sure Armok would prefer animosity to death.  Even then, I suspect survivor Armok's recovery will keep her from noticing you for your first month of service.   :P
