Pigs!
« on: October 11, 2012, 03:11:31 pm »

I've just discovered these incredibly useful animals! (Well, I always knew they existed, but I just didn't really bother with them)

PIGS DON'T GRAZE! You can stick a pair of pigs in a little stone room and forget about them. Eventually you'll have a herd. They produce milk, which you can turn into delicious, and relatively valuable, pig cheese. This can be an infinite source of food for your whole fortress, and it requires absolutely nothing to maintain! Just stash a pile of pigs in a room somewhere near your farmer's workshops! They also give you leather, bones, and quite a bit of meat when they're slaughtered.

They have joined sheep and turkeys as the only livestock I think are worth having. (Unless you count giant cave spiders as "livestock")

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

You can't load animals into a minecart. You'd have to put them in cages first and then load them up. In that case, you might as well just fling cages at your enemies.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

It is a bearded pig, a species native to Borneo. The most Dwarfly pig that there ever was.

I prefer boars to pigs if I can capture them. They yield tusks.
