Chapter 10

The dwarves ran and ran. Not a single one of them paused or slowed, for they knew it would mean their deaths. As they ran the sounds of battle faded behind them, until they could no longer hear the sounds of death and dying. Yet still the dwarves ran, Grimil not letting them stop for any reason. Several hours passed until finally they exited the swamps and Grimil allowed for the group to pause. As one the dwarves threw themselves on to the ground sucking in air as fast as their lungs would permit. After a few moments Handrel stood up and addressed the group. "Brothers. We lost much this day to the hordes of our enemy. Brave dwarves all, gave their lives for the expedition and ultimately for our escape. We have no food, no shelter, and no help. We are far from home, which means we cannot turn back." He paused as he turned and took the few remaining dwarves in his gaze. "We must drive forwards to our goal. We are so close to our destination, that the mountain looms before us. We owe it to our fallen brethren to finish our task, and show our enemies our conviction." As he spoke Handrel's voice slowly filled with conviction and passion. He gestured and looked to each dwarf in turn trying to stir their passion. Yet many turned away, their faith in Handrel having already been lost.

The Blessed Gunner took this opportunity to speak up, his ruined and torn robes dangling. "It was not Handrel who saved us against the kobold vermin. It was not Handrel who saved us from the undead at the crossroads. And it was not Handrel who brought down the ogres to save his kin. Why would we follow you any further into death and danger? The ancestors call for us to make sound decisions and investments." The Blessed Gunner stood up clasping his golden book and stared hard into the eyes of Handrel. "And you Handrel are no longer worthy of my investment." The other dwarves all nodded in agreement, while Handrel seemed to collapse in on himself. "Brothers, there is one among you who has shown courage, conviction, self-sacrifice, and dwarven stubbornness. The ancestors would have us make sound investments, and I say this dwarf is an investment solid as the mountain stone. I say Grimil shall lead us!" The other dwarves all grumbled and nodded, all knowing what the Gunner had said to be true. Grimil walked slowly to the front of the little group, his chainmail clinking softly. Once at the front he turned and faced them all his face looking exhausted yet still with the stamp of determination. "Brothers, we have been through a lot to get here today. We have trekked many miles, have faced down kobold vermin, and helped the dead back to their slumber." As Grimil spoke the crowd gave a rumbling and grumbling response, which as he continued slowly grew in volume. "We have taken down goblin and ogre, and yet still more kobolds and undead. It is clear now that some strange forces are arrayed against us and our quest. Yet has that stopped us? Ney it has not stopped us, it has filled our hearts with fury and dwarven stubbornness. We continued on because we go to start a new home. Our old home a glorious as it may be, is fighting the losing fight. It is dying from the inside. The very mines that have sustained us and made us strong are now barren and weak." Many dwarven faces turned from having faces filled with determination to that of sorrow when they contemplated their home. Others hung their heads in shame for having thought of abandoning their quest to help their home. "We have lost much on our march to find a new home. We have lost kith and kin, heirlooms and belongings to the angry hordes that persues us. Many gave their last breath so that we may escape and continue on to our new home. Should we give up on our quest and betray those sacrifices?" At this statement the dwarves looked up as one and gave a resounding no. Grimil gave a determined and hopeful smile, while he turned to face the road. With a quick swing of his pick he pointed down the road and towards the mountains in the distance. "Well then enough talkin and let's get goin." Cryed Grimil as the little group took off at a sprint.

And so the dwarves continued their journey to the mountains, full of conviction and determination. Yet for their enemies the battle had not ended. When finally Kranth Morningbrew fell to the hordes of undead and goblins Tolestus and the Great Grey appeared on either side of the battle field. Tolestus standing amongst his undead was the first to speak of the two. "Well my short and molding friend, what brings you to this battle field so far from you hole?" The Grey's face momentarily purpled with rage before he quickly marshalled himself . With a quick snap of his fingers he summoned forth his demon general, unknowing that it was working for Tolestus. The creature's job had been to destroy the army of goblins and kobolds, yet the dwarves had done such a successful job that the creature had remained silent on the matter. Now however it knew that it might full fill that bargain. The Great Grey's face twisted into one of arrogance and assumed superiority. "The great and mighty Tolestus, had best watch his tongue or I might have the inclination to have it removed." Tolestus gave a great laugh before he responded, hate and disgust apparent on his face. "Is that so Grey? Well I might just have to dispose of you then wont I?" With the conversation now dead and at an end Tolestus began to chant in an unknown and arcane language and to weave his hands through strange patterns in the air. The Grey's smug smile quickly fell from his face when Tolestus began his chanting and the Grey realised what he meant to do. The goblin clearly in a panic now, turned to the great demon and his troops and screamed. "GET HIM! GET THE WIZARD!" The horde of goblins and kobolds jumped to action and charged forwards to do battle with the shambling undead horde. Poisoned dirks met decayed flesh and spears to the back punched through rotting flesh, yet it meant little to the undead. They could no longer be poisoned, and their organs were of no use anyways so impaling them meant nothing to them. The goblin and kobold horde as deadly as it was to the living was near harmless to the undead. Undead that were speared simply continued to walk forwards and tore the goblin wielding the spear apart. Stabs in the back had sharp teeth and nails turned upon them in response.

While the goblins were being slowly torn apart, the little kobolds seemed to be having a much better time of the battle. They carried clubs and slings all of which were blunt, which meant they could batter the dead things to bits. They also had their shaman with them who began to shower the undead in holy spell after holy spell. Yet despite the size of the monster horde the zombies slowly began to win forward, pausing only to feast on fresh corpses and those not quite dead yet. The Great Grey saw the truth before him, he was unprepared his troops were being eaten. In frustration he turned on the demon who simply stood to the side not becoming involved in the fighting. "You miserable worm! Get into that fight NOW!" The demon gave a nod as f to obey, and waded into the battle. Yet it quickly became clear he did not agree with the goblin about who's side he was on. With great sweeps of axe and sword he tore apart the goblins and kobolds from behind. This turned the slow loss into an outright route, as the goblins and kobolds began to flee. The Great Grey to, began to flee and it was at this point that Tolestus's spell went off. The sky immediately began to turn a black and red ash colour, which to the Grey seemed like a fire. Yet it was not the sky that drew his attention, but what rained down from the sky. Great balls of fire began to rain down, intent on crashing into the fleeing monsters. Billowing smoke as they fell they began to impact on the field amongst the goblins, kobolds and even undead. Where ever they landed death followed. Each blast incinerated dozens of creatures at a time and set hundreds of others on fire. One poor troll was not incinerated by the first blast so was hit with another two, its pitiful roar abruptly ending. The Great Grey knew he was doomed and should flee yet the spectacle of his life's work being blown apart froze him to the spot.

This would have been the end right there for the goblin if not for the kobold shaman who suddenly jumped into the way of the meteors and blasted those that headed for the goblin apart. With each shuddering THUUM and flash of green blue energy the Grey regained his wits. His eyes finally focused on the object of his hate and spells of retaliation filled his mind. He began to wave his staff around through the air and gesture strangle arcane symbols. Tolestus spotted this and quickly fell into chanting of his own. The Grey reached a crescendo and with a barked command and gesture bolts of green lighting began to strike out towards Tolestus and his shambling undead. Tolestus just finished his chanting in time to erect a magical barrier that protected him from the lightning. Yet not so for his minions who when struck by the lightning immediately exploded sending dust an bone fragments in all directions. The Demon noticing the flashes of arcane energy stopped from his slaughter of monsters and saw that Tolestus would need assistance. With a bellowed charge the demon raised is unholy blade and charged back down the field towards the combatants. Yet the Grey was prepared for this, and when the Demon came in range he turned and focused the lightning on the demon.

The Demon which normally would be ready for an arcane assault was caught unawares, as it had thought to catch the Grey unawares. The lightning struck the demon with such force that it blasted him to the ground. Its skin began to cook and its limbs bent and contorted into unnatural angles while smoke and steam began to pour from the demon's mouth. The Grey continued his lightning while he fished into his robes for an aritfact that would allow him to finish off the demon quickly. The creature saw this and knew that his doom was assured. With the last ounce of strength remaining to it and just before the Grey brought his artifact to bare the demon threw one fire ball. It was a small thing and would never do harm to the Grey with his magical protections, yet the Grey was not its target. The ball of hellfire lazily flew through the air as the Grey raised his small medallion and blasted the Demon with such fury that the creature was incinerated and blasted from existence. Yet the ball of flame flew through the air and connected with the back of the kobold shaman's head. The small creature had been so focused stopping the meteors for its master that it had not noticed the ball of flame.

The battlefield and resounded with a loud BOOM that knocked everyone from their feet. When the smoke was blown away by the impact of a nearby meteor, it was seen that the ground where the shaman stood was nothing but a crater and the Shaman was gone. The Grey while he shakily rose from the ground saw the meteors unblocked resumed their course for him.  He knew he was finished yet still his will to live was great. He raised his medallion high and crushed it in the palm of his hand. The sound of the crack and splittering was heard across the field by Tolestus despite the loud explosions of the meteors. Tolestus quickly flew into another incantation and gestures determined to stop the goblin. Yet it was too late. With a flash and the sound of a thunderbolt the Grey was gone. Where he stood but a moment ago was immediately stuck by the remainder of the meteor spell. Yet Tolestus knew the Grey had escaped. He smiled though when he saw that the weapons and artifacts of the dwarves were still intact. He went over and quickly scooped them into one of the magical pouches of his robe. He turned and opened a magical door back to his tower, a smug smile on his face. he knew that the Grey was still alive and a threat, yet he was confident that the battle today spelt the end of his foe. With those final thoughts he stepped through the door and disappeared.

OOC- Well here we are chapter 10, I hope everyone has enjoyed the read so far, for here comes a potentially interesting part. I have opened the story up to suggestions. Anyone may post what they think should happen, or what they would like to have happen next. People may also take possession of a character (other than Grimil, and of course the bad guys) and tell me what they would prefer for that character to do in the next entry. I will seriously take any and all suggestions. However if it is SEVERELY plot changing for the story, it will be put to a vote and or (if no one votes) I will take artistic license and "alter" how the suggestion takes place. Also for those who pick a dwarf they may choose a fittingly dwarf name for their char (Im fairly open for names, however I will not accept anything rude). Every dwarf is armed with one weapon, their clothes, armour, and a few tools/items. Silverpicks have picks, candles, and chainmail. Everhind has crossbow(24 bolts), chainmail, woodsmen ax. Gemchipper has chainmail, hammer, chisels, and gems, (blessed gunner has holy book). Stronghammers have hammer/shield, chainmail, forging equipment. Handrel has ax, chainmail, map, and deed of rulership. Anyways tell me what you think and here are the dwarves available.

Grimil- Stronghammer (me)

Well son of a witch I can't believe
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
dies. He's who I wanted to claim when I cheated and looked at the end of Chapter 10 first.

Well hrm... I'll take the Everhind name 'Dwdal'
Not sure how far from the new site we are... like close day or two walk? Or will Dwdal need to hunt for food since we lost all our goods. If he needs to hunt, he needs to stumble across something beautiful in his hunt (naked female elf bathing, water nymph bathing, a princess trying to get away from her duties of royalty... bathing) anyways, that'll add that good old fashion love story.
If they're close and about to reach the site that too can still happen while on the out skirts of the site.

Or have him be more like a scout and report back every once in awhile. Maybe train a falcon or something BA like that.

Edit: holy cow great idea have
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
come back somehow to the group! like he barely made it alive, and he over heard Tolestus, or has some great secrete but of course passes out to injury for a few days and everyone wonders what it is and he has to be dragged by two dwarfs in makeshift cot... or not just an idea.

Dbl Edit: oh and in regards to the story, LOVE IT!! You gotta keep it up. Of course you could polish it a few places here and there and a few grammatical stuff, but its few and far between and not ruining my immersion in the story. Well done.

Glad to hear it, once finished I plan on editing and polishing. Your character has been duly entered and your wants taken into account. Weekends are my writing periods, so anyone else who wants a char has till friday before I write a new chapter. Anyone can pick a char at any time, they will just have to wait till my next writing period to be entered.

Chapter 11

Dusk had fallen by the time the Dwarves stopped for another breather, this time with the woods beginning to thin around them. Grimil flopped onto the nearest fallen tree and gulped down air. He had not sat for long before one of the dwarves wondered up to him. The Everhind by the look of him. Grimil gave a great huff before addressing the dwarf who had by this point, come to a stop in front of him. "Hey, boyo what can I do for ya?" The Everhind gave a gruff smile while he rubbed his rough hands over his beard. "Well to start with my name be Dwdal, and I came to talk to ya about where we be runnin to." Grimil gave a nod of understanding and gave his own beard a scratch. "Yes the Grisly Mountains, what about them." Dwdal stuck his thumbs into his belt and rocked on his heels. "Well we be two days away from them cursed mountains, and I be knowin that we need food and supplies before we get there." Grimil was nodding before Dwdal had gotten any further in his thoughts. "And you were thinkin that you should go and hunt us some food before we get there. I was thinkin along those same lines." Dwdal broke into a wide smile as he replied with a chuckle. "Well they always did say that us Silverpicks and Everhinds were a crazy bunch." They both gave a hearty chuckle before they returned to the seriousness at hand.

"Well we are goin to meet at the base of them mountains straight from here." Grimil pointed as he spoke. "If you go out and hunt, you could meet us there." Dwdal nodded "That I could do, bag us some food and get a look at the land." Dwdal pulled his crossbow from his belt, and gave a gruff laugh "Glad I am I didn't drop this in the fight." Grimil smiled and patted his pickaxe "I glad we all are." With those final words Dwdal headed off into the woods, while Grimil told the group the plan. "He be going to find us food while we continue on to the mountains to begin our plan for a home." The other dwarves looked hopeful as they once again tightened their belts and marched towards the mountain. All except for Handrel, who seemed to glower at the group and glare at Grimil.

The woods were peaceful as Dwdal made his way quietly through, that is quiet for a dwarf. Which means Dwdal was tromping through the underbrush careful not to step on any branches. He knew he had to make his way away from the group to actually find anything to hunt. So he struck out completely away from the group. He passed many fallen logs, old tracks and paths of the animals of the woods. It was not long however before he spotted something that he could hunt. A deer. It was a four year buck by the looks of him, with a pretty good rack on his head. "Your goin over me fire place, when I get one." He said as he raised his crossbow and sighted in on the deer. With a slight breath to steady his aim, he fired his crossbow. With a click and a twang the iron bolt shot forth, and darted forwards through the trees. With the slightest of whistles and a small thud of bolt on bone it hit home and the deer dropped. "Damn I missed." Muttered to himself as he jogged over to the beast to inspect and clean his kill.

As he approached he had indeed missed, hitting only the creature's eye instead of dead center of the iris. He gave a good hearted chuckle as he thought about what other Everhinds would have said about the kill. But then he froze, for sticking out of the other side of the beast's head was a feathered arrow. His hand leapt to his crossbow but not before a voice spoke. "That is far enough Master Dwarf, any further and I am afraid you will become well acquainted with my arrow." Dwdal however had other ideas. With his left hand he hauled the deer up and over himself while at the same time his other hand grabbed for the crossbow. The voice had clearly not anticipated this move for the arrow thudded into the already dead deer. With a deft flick of his arm, Dwdal had his crossbow over his should and pointed at the owner of the voice. His other hand just as quick released the carcass, grabbed a bolt and slammed it into place. Yet the owner of the voice to was quick. For when it realised it had missed it had pulled free another arrow, notched and drew. And so it happened that the two combatants had bolt and arrow pointed at each other.

Dwdal was the first to break the sudden silence. "Mistress rogue, it would seem you are not quite the shot you thought yerself to be. How about ya lower the bow and I won't put a bolt between them pointy ears. The elf woman, for indeed she was an elf, lowered her bow and gave a wide and bright smile. "As you wish Master Dwarf, it would seem you have an edge and advantage in archery. Would you but do me the honour of lowering your own weapon so we may speak?" Dwdal was about to reply along the lines of over my dead grandfather, when suddenly a memory almost as old as he demanded attention. "You will fall in love with an exotic woman far from your home, and under the threat of death." Cried the voice of his clan's Rune Master when asked to predict the future of a much younger Dwdal. With eyes blinking with the sudden rush of emotions, Dwdal lowered his crossbow. "My name be Dwdal Everhind, what be yours?" The elf woman smiled warmly and replied "Lorath Silverriver." And Dwdal knew he was doomed, for it was the name from his dreams.

      .      .      .      .      .      .

Grimil nodded as his group stopped for the evening and all began to sit grumbling. It had been a hard day's march with one more to go before they reached the mountain. Some of the dwarves passed around small handfuls of berries they had found while marching. Grimil smiled, how he loved blueberries. "Right boys eat your meal and then I want two of ya to go cut wood for fires. The rest of you are to make this area as defensible as possible, drag some logs over if you have too." The group nodded and split themselves off into separate work parties. Handrel took this opportunity to approach Grimil. "Evening Master Silverpick, you make a good leader." Handrel said as he sat beside Grimil. The Silverpick dwarf just laughed at Handrel's attempt at pleasantries. "There ain't no need for formality and Masters here, speak your mind Handrel." Though slightly taken aback Handrel gave a quick nod of his head before continuing. "Well you are doing a great job with leading the group, and they look up to you. However I own both this expedition and any fortress that is setup in these mountains." Grimil's eyes took on a hard gleam as he sat and stared at Handrel weighing what the other dwarf was saying. "Get on with it Handrel." Handrel gave another quick nod and again began to speak. "Well I was wanting to know when I can take charge of my group again. We are almost at the mountain, so the danger should be over. So why not let the more experience dwarf in the group take charge. I know exactly what the group has to do." Grimil, continued to stare long and hard at Handrel, completely at a loss for sheer arrogance of this dwarf.

Grimil finally came to a decision so stood and spoke. "We can worry about that at the mountain. Once we get there we will hold a vote, as to who leads. You either way still own the proceeds, however we will choose who leads us." With those final words Grimil walked away, his chainmail shirt clinking. Handrel just stood there his face beat red and his hands in fists by his sides. He knew he had no chance at the election, he knew who would win. Yet he was the one who owned everything, he was the one sent to be king of this mountain, not some self important miner. Handrel walked to the far side of the camp to the Stronghammers who were hacking away at a couple of trees. "Hello friends I have come to talk." The Stronghammers all turned and looked at Handrel a look of suspicion on their collective faces. "I have come to invoke the loyalty of your pledge. I want your support for all future decisions, else you are all oath breakers." The two dwarves looked to each other, their faces both dark and gloomy. They knew that this would lead to nothing good, yet they would never be labeled as oath breakers and have their clan names ruined. "Ai Handrel that we did. What do ye want of us?" Handrel smiled a look of satisfaction on his face. "You will know when the time comes. For now just enjoy yourself and don't look so glum." The two dwarves turned back to their work hoping to lose themselves in their work. Handrel calmly walked away from them, a much happier dwarf. Grimil may have his popularity and clan name on his side. Handrel would have tradition and oaths on his. It may be a low way of working but it was effective.

I like the dynamics of this story. Always good characters and personality traits.
Constructive criticism - A lot more blaring spelling/grammatical errors in this chapter.

I'm surprised Handrel spoke with Grimil about the power struggle. He doesn't seem to be one that would go to that level of being reasonable... I'd imagine he won't do that again cause he tried once, it failed, never again would he trust Grimil to do what's 'right' (right in his eyes).

Grimil is smart though! Not saying 'No bugger off' but leaving it to the members.

Dwdal needs to play it cool, and not let the female elf know his Rune Reading.
How is their relationship going to play out?
The dwarf group obviously won't want some elf in their ranks, but Dwdal could easily sway them because she knows the land and is proficient in healing. Would she want to even go with a group of dirt diggers? Does Dwdal need to go with her to her village? They would probably kill him on sight. What are the relations between elfs and dwarfs in this world? Dwdal does have a few days before meeting at the base of the mountain, so first task is to use his brawn and beard to win her heart. I still think he should have a pet falcon, maybe she could teach him? Maybe it's a bonding moment for them... finding a hurt falcon, healing it, and raising it... guess they only have two days though and that's going to take months.

The vote - there are 10 members, each leader would vote for themselves so 8 votes left. Gemchipper's being more traditional would vote Handrel and the Stronghammers now will vote for Handrel after being reminded of their oaths. Dwdal would vote for Grimil as he already looks to him for orders and permission, also because Handrel was strongly against the elf, but Grimil saw the value of having a guide for the surounding lands and voted for her to accompany them.  3 votes left, which are the Silverpicks who would vote for their clans member. Split vote! Maybe a long lost member could show up (hint hint wink wink) OR, they could have a duel Of course the duel isn't played fair by Handrel.

EDIT: Or Dwdal was too busy with his new relationship, he didn't make it in time for the vote so Handrel wins.
P.S. I'm not going to make it another week before an update... can you do two chapters a day? Thanks! :-)

lol nice analysis, quite a bit is bang on some projections are a little off but on the whole thanks. And yes the editing for this one is more needed, as I was falling asleep from assignments. I wouldn't be able to due 2 per day :P, but I can try for one release monday morn and one thursday evening. now to directly answer some of those points.

the errors- if it is in speech that is done on purpose, outside of speech its due to sleep deprivation.

Handrels forwardness- was done because he thought Grimil would submit to him because of the backing of the king. And of course no, from now on he will not reason with Grimil.

Dwdal will follow duty over anything else- though he is at the top of a slippery slope and he may start the fall from his decisions.

Falcon- not going to happen yet, probably going to happen once the dwarves are established

the vote- all correct however the blessed Gunner has spoken out against Handrel before so may be swayed. People who may or may not return, are realistic and would side with tradition in fear of royal retribution. The set votes are Stronghammers and Silverpicks everyone else can be won over to various degrees. Also if anyone picks a Char they may have their character vote anyway they want (that means you too Brewster).

Well thats all for now, Characters are still available, and the future is still bright for the dwarves. To my pen I go!

What's going to happen to Dwdal? Will he find true love?
Can Grimil continue to lead the survivors, or might Handrel seize leadership and force his will upon the group?
What terror will Tolestus plague on the lands next? How will the Grey get his revenge?
Stay tuned readers until the next adventure of "Founding of a Home!"

which will be when?
You lied to us Stronghammer, you lied!! For shame.

Chapter 12

With a loud bang the Grey was thrown from his portal onto the floor of his throne room. His once luxurious robes were burnt and ruined, and the few remaining hairs on his head were singed to the roots. He gave a shuddering breath as he realised that he had barely made it out of that fight with his skin. This fear and uncertainty lasted for a few seconds before his all consuming rage kicked in. "How dare that fool!" raged the Grey as he shakily stood. "That utter traitor! The absolute buffoon!" He made his way over to his cabinet full of magically enchanted robes, to pick out a more suitable piece of garb. "How dare he betray me! Me, of all people. I will have my revenge!" His final shout rang out into the room as the robe slipped over his head.

The shout quickly brought forth two of his goblin generals, who scrambled into the room. "Your Grace, we are most fortunate and pleased that you survived your ordeal." Squealed the first general into the room. The first thought that came to the Grey's mind was to strike out at these two cowards, out of sheer anger. However his more calculating mind quickly stepped in and smothered the idea. "Yes it certainly is most fortunate I survived." Snapped the Grey in irritation. "No thanks to you two idiots". The two generals dropped close to the ground and raised their arms as if to ward off a blow. "However fear not, I will not destroy you. You still have use." The relief on the goblins' faces was clear as they stood up a little straighter. "What is the plan your Grace for revenge?" Inquired the second general having grown a little more bold. The Grey smiled as he leaned back into his throne. "We will have revenge but first, we must destroy the dwarves before they can dig in and fortify." The two generals grinned from ear to ear at the thought of the coming plunder. "Gather the remaining tribes and rouse the ogres, I want you two to go and wipe the dwarves out." The two generals turned and began to walk out, but the Grey had one last thing to say. "And if you don't kill them, don't come back. The generals gave a weak nod and scurried from the room. The Grey leaned further back into the soft furs as he thought to himself. First the dwarves, then he could move on to the traitor. With that thought he closed his eyes and allowed himself to rest.

The sun was shining as the dwarves continued their march to the mountain. They knew that they would reach the base of it that day, and so many a face had a slight look of hope on it. Mind you not an extreme or even recognizable look of hope, for dwarves are tough and stubborn creatures. Yet it was clear that the mood for the dwarves had improved. Grimil though, was the only one who did not share the look of hope. He knew that once they reached the mountain Handrel would seize control of the group. Grimil grimaced at the thought of Handrel in control once more. But if the group voted for him, then Grimil would not stand in their way. Another thought occurred to him then as he plodded along. Dwdal had been gone for a little over a day now, and that worried him. Grimil knew that hunting was not a process to be rushed, but he could not shake the feeling that something had happened.

Little did Grimil know that something indeed did happen, though not along the lines that he had been thinking. Lorath had taken Dwdal back to her village when she heard that a group of dwarves were passing to the nearby mountain. She had assured the dwarf that she could get some supplies for the group. Yet when they had arrived the elder was unavailable to talk to so Dwdal had been shown to some quarters and spent the night. He arose the next morning to the sound of quiet lute music from outside his window and light streaming in. He rose from the soft covers of his bed and stretched in the morning light. He had not had such a restful sleep in some time and now he felt great. He knew however that he was soon going to be late for meeting up with the group, and that they would desperately need food. So he quickly put on his sturdy boots and slid his mail over his head, and quickly set it on his shoulders. He strapped on his belt and grabbed his crossbow and gave himself a quick look over. Satisfied that everything was in place, he headed for the wooden door.

He opened the door to the platform and ladder that would lead him to the ground. However standing there as if about to knock was Lorath. Dwdal at the sight of her again heard the words of his Runemaster from when he was a child. He quickly shook the words from his heard and greeted the elven woman. "Well did you talk to yer Elder yet? My fellows are going to be really hungry right now and it was my job to feed them." The woman smiled and lowered her hand, yet at the inquiry her happiness dropped a peg. "No I have not met with the Elder yet, I came to bring you to get breakfast." Dwdal shook his head in disagreement and headed towards the ladder. "No if your people are not prepared to help me then I must be going, I have a duty to perform." Lorath however gently grabbed his shoulder preventing him from heading to the ladder. "You must not leave. The Elder must speak with you first." Dwdal now clearly irritated at the elven customs turned back around his face set stubbornly. "Now what do you mean must not. Can I or cant I leave." He finished by crossing his arms and giving her a light glare. Lorath bit her bottom lip as she thought before finally coming to a decision. "You cannot leave until the Elder has spoken to you. It is our custom." She finished in a way of defence.

Dwdal gave a great huff of frustration and irritation before turning around and climbing down the ladder. Lorath peeked over the edge of the platform and called after him. "You cannot leave the village." Once at the bottom Dwdal gave a great laugh as he responded. "I would like to see your pointy ears try and stop me." With that he stomped towards the edge of the village. He did not have to wait long to see the elves try. For as he approached the tight outer ring of trees a branch snapped down and hoisted him into the air by his leg. With a resounding "AAAAAARGH." Dwdal was lifted 7 feet into the air and hung their bouncing lightly in the wind. Lorath quickly jogged over laughing as she was unable to contain herself. Dwdal his face beat red from embarrassment and from the blood rushing to his head snapped at her. "You darned elf, think this is funny do you? You won't be laughing when I get down." He quickly reached for his axe and began to try and hack at the offending branch. However the poor dwarf could not reach the branch and only managed in making the slight bounce become more pronounced. Lorath laughed even louder at the development of the scene before her which only served to fuel Dwdal's attempts. Soon the dwarf had flailed and swung so forcefully that he went flying up, down and side to side by this seemingly untouchable branch.

However the branch could no longer contain the 200 pound dwarf in his flailing so he was launched, like a stone from a sling across the village. Lorath by this point had dropped to the ground and seemed barely able to breath, because she laughed so hard. As this living missile sailed through the village, all that was heard by the elves was a wailing "EEEEEEEEEELVES." With a resounding thump and crash Dwdal smashed into a water barrel. Dwdal laid on the shattered remains of the barrel quietly grumbling to himself about how dwarves should not fly, as Lorath hurried over her laughter still bubbling. Yet the first face that Dwdal saw was not that of Lorath but of a wizened old man. The face stared at him for a moment before quietly reflecting "Do all dwarves behave in such strange ways?". The old face produced a hand and helped the sodden dwarf to his feet. " My name is Elder Remus, welcome to our village. We have food and drink available, though if you require a drink please just ask you need not fly into the barrel." The wrinkled face gave a smile before adding "Besides, you clearly don't fit in one." Dwdal just nodded and grumbled to himself as he tried to maintain some semblance of dwarven gruffness. The Elder gave Dwdal a quick look over before he seemed to come to some decision. "I have decided to give you food for you brethren and to send my daughter with you as a guide and to act as our diplomat." The Elder gestured at Lorath before turning to her. "Now I want you to learn what you can of these dwarves and their new home. If we are to be allies then we must know what it is they make of value." Lorath nodded and gave her father a quick and tight hug. "And Lorath be safe, the goblins are strangely active this year." Lorath stepped back from the hug and nodded. "I will father."

Dwdal stood there his arms crossed staring at the elves while they spoke. "You know I am right here and can here you?" The Elder turned to Dwdal and raised an eyebrow. "Your point Master Dwarf?" Dwdal went back to grumbling about elves and their horridly strange behaviours while Lorath led him to the granaries. They were given a small wagon and many sacks of grain and vegetables. They also gave them barrels of water and wine, as well as a few barrels of dried meat. They also were given a small pony for Dwdal to ride and another one to pull the wagon. The Elder met them at the edge of the village along with several other elves all dressed in robes. "Now mother nature be with you and may Delune grant you guidance and speed." Dwdal dipped his head and Lorath waved good bye. With those final words the elf and dwarf set charged from the village. Both ponies at a trot and Dwdal trying desperately to stay in the saddle.

Tolestus waved his hand and the image on the mirror faded. He was pleased that the dwarves had found the elves and that the two groups would become allies. He had nothing to fear from them, in fact he had often dealt with the elves before. Tolestus was not completely evil, he just was always in search of knowledge. So the elves and dwarves would largely have no problem with him. However he knew that for the Grey this was bad indeed, for both the elves and dwarves deeply hated goblins and their kind. "Ah the kindness of being born human." With a smile Tolestus turned back to his examination of the dwarven weapons and fire arms. Strangely though several axes were missing and when he had gone back to check the bodies for them he had noticed a body was missing. He chuckled to himself as he thought on it. "Clearly the dwarves were of tougher stuff then he gave them credit for.
