Major League Baseball thread (because it's playoffs time)
« on: October 11, 2012, 06:29:34 am »

I expect all you Americans (North and South) to represent if'n your State (or favorite MLB player) has found themselves with a team in the enviable position of making the playoffs this year.

Also if this thread exists four pages back expect my duplicate thread to die a quick, silent, and painless death involving a locking mechanism and it's creator's spite.

To start, these guys:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only thing I have to say about Tigers baseball this year is they are making it TOO exciting in the playoffs. It was great watching this year either way. I don't like singling out members of a team because it seems unfair to me having to choose so many worthy players, but how about that Cabrera? Greatest hitter of my day and he's on my home team. I'll do what I don't like again for singling Prince and say he's been awesome both at bat and on defense. Great heads up plays by the Prince.

The rest of the Tigers; well you know who you are. From the great pitching this year from the Starters to the bullpen to the closers, to the excellent prospects from the Minor Leagues, to my Dad's favorite in Delmon ('Yay Delmon!') and everyone else I'm ashamed to not have mentined you in particular, it's one of the best ball clubs I've ever seen. Win this game for us all and we'll keep rooting for you until you make it to the World Series. Either way we've had one heck of a year and I know I for one will be very satisfied and you won't hear any boos from me; unlike that shameful treatment the Rangers and especially their slugger received in the Lonestar State. That's not to say I won't be happier to Bless You Boys though.

The last game I couldn't see due to it being on a station I don't get, which is a shame. I know game 5 is viewable though so keep your heads up Tigers and I'll be keeping both eyes on you.

Also, to Jim (and the other coaches who are equally excellent), thanks a ton for being our skipper and doing such a fine job all around. I know you all are beloved here in Michigan as much as we love to watch your team in action.

While I can't make such a glowing post every year remember that I'll probably still be watching baseball. My thanks to you all.

Aand I drop my browser shields to visit twitter and find it's not the real Phil Coke. The hell Twitter? I take back what I said about wishing I knew your school of internet wizardry. It's all misdirection and illusion. When I want to confuse a female beach volleyball player (aka sports-talented professional athletic sandy bikini babe that constantly hops and jumps around) so I can appear behind her as a wealthy gentleman I'll get back to you.

My team won 66 games, the only teams I'm cheering for are whoevers playing against the Yankees and to a lesser extent the team playing against the Tigers (nothing personal, but I can't cheer for a division rival).  Here's the actual results of the playoffs so far:
WILD CARD GAME (Best of 1)
American League
Baltimore  5
Texas      1
National League
St. Louis Cardinals 6
Atlanta Braves      3

DIVISION SERIES (Best of 5 games) [All games are on TBS for American audiences]
American League
New York Yankees lead Baltimore Orioles 2 games to 1.  Next game tonight 7:37 EST, at New York.
Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers are tied 2 games to 2.  Next game tonight 9:37 EST, at Oakland.
National League
San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds are tied 2 games to 2.  Next game today 1:07 EST, at Cincinnati.
St. Louis Cardinals lead Washington Nationals 2 games to 1.  Next game today 4:07 EST, at Washington.

And Duuvian, I watched the Tigers before the playoffs started when they were in Minneapolis, and the one achilles heel I noticed was that your bullpen cannot hold a lead.  The Athletics are a playoff team, and they have taken advantage of that problem.

Yeah, bullpen is an issue sometimes. Sometimes they get the job done though. They have the setup men though for the closer. It's just a matter of yelling at the TV hard enough until Jim puts in a different pitcher sometimes. I figure I have to scream myself hoarse for him to do something wild like put in a starter where the bullpen should be in an emergency situation like game 5 (can they even do that?)

I'm not sure who is starting today since yesterday's game was effectively blacked out for me I think as I couldn't find it; but if it's not Verlander he would be THE bullpen if I was the coach. Scherzer (probably didn't spell that right) if not. If neither are available then I'd go with Fister, Benoit, or Sanchez.

Also I suppose it's OK for you to want a division rival to lose; but do you really want a Cali tam to advance? California; where they have something other than baseball to love?

I mean, for goodness sakes, you can MAKE PORN THERE LEGALLY

I for one think that means they have ENOUGH of the American Dream. All Detroit needs is one world series and she'll be slightly less crumbling and run down after the ginormous parade. From what I've seen in old video it's like we won World War 3 when the Tigers win the World Series; guys with glasses kissing random hot ladies on the street and confetti everywhere and the whole city shuts down to party in the street and everything. I'd probably go there for the celebration, no matter what my stuck in the mud dad says. He had his chance in '84 when he was childless and not too old I would say for that. Besides he probably had money for gas and a decent job.

EDIT: Fixed my post; 84 was forgotten momentarily by me as that was a few years before I was born. Sorry Brookens and co., you all the man nonetheless. As are '68 and Al Kaline and co. My Dad still remembers all the '68 guys and their positions.

Yes, that's not uncommon actually.  When teams backs are against the wall, they'll bring in the best pitchers they've got.  Usually teams wait until the Championship series or beyond to do that, however.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I welcome the World Series every year, for it means baseball is almost over and I can stop hearing about it. I dunno what it is, but it's the one major sport (other than soccer) that I just cannot generate an interest in, no matter what. Just bores the ever living fuck out of me. I've gone to a few minor-league games (Durham Bulls), but even then it's just an excuse to sit outside in nice weather, drink beer in public and chat with friends. "What's that? Somebody hit a ball and some people are running? Yeah, go running people! Okay, get me another a beer."

Man, I wish baseball was popular here in Australia. :-\ It is so very much more interesting than cricket.
Cricket is basically baseball's malformed younger cousin who has been locked in an attic and fed on crayons since infancy. At least, that's what it seems like when I watch them. :P

I'm sure we've had this discussion in another thread...cricket is awesome, because to an American it looks like team Calvinball.

Australian Baseball League regular season starts November 1st, if you wish to see local games.

And RedKing, as with almost all sports, anything professional is going to be better than minor league stuff.  I, personally, don't see what all the fuss is about basketball, the sport where one person is more important than the team itself.

Baseball is also extremely easy to nerd out over with varying, competing statistics that all have their benefits and their flaws.

Wow, I honestly did not know about that. :o
Mainly because interesting sports are never shown on free television over here... It seems the ABL is only shown on cable, as was the case with basketball when I wanted to watch that. Dang.
I need to get cable at some point. Definitely. I could split my time between watching proper sports and old episodes of Scooby-Doo...

Basketball is the one sport where I would say that doesn't hold true. NBA is the worst thing ever. College basketball tends to be more competitive and with better caliber of play. Pros get away with stuff dozens of times every game that would draw whistles at the collegiate level. I'd rather watch Duke and UNC play a regular-season game than watch the NBA Finals. And I'm hardly alone in that.

Point, I can't stand the NBA and usually just stick to college level when it comes to basketball myself.  College baseball uses aluminum bats, which turns off a lot of people who would otherwise enjoy it.

Yeah, I can't watch basketball either. It's become: I run into other guy on purpose; other guy committed the foul. I get two 'relatively' easy points.

That said I probably couldn't shoot a free throw for my life so there is that.

But if the game is about free throws why not play the game (I've heard it called different names in different areas) with two basketballs instead, where if you make the basket before the guy in front of you (who gets his own rebounds and continues to shoot until they've made it or the next guy makes it) that guy is out until everyone is eliminated; and everyone starts by taking a free throw?

EDIT: It was called Lightning. Also heard it called Shoot Out. Also it's best when the two players are absolutely terrible because everyone is watching and waiting for one to finally finish. If they ever have a Fatlympics that should be the main sport. Maybe half pipe rolling too, I dunno. Hehe, they'd kind of stick to the half pipe and flow over their own fat. McDonalds could be a sponsor. It'd be like <half turn, flowage, half turn, flowage, half turn, acrobatic pirouette, flowage>

A man can dream. A man can dream. Though I'm not fat now so much as I plan to possibly be in the future if they have a Fatlympics.

More realistically, Lightning should be an Olympic sport I think. It was the most fun I'd had with a basketball; seeing as the main problem with basketball are the rules.

Also I liked standing at half court and whipping that ball at the net the entire gym period if we were able to choose from anything. (Hockey was not allowed for me as I hit a kid in the head with a hockey stick in the 6th grade because he kept hitting me in the leg painfully on blatant purpose when the gym teacher wasn't looking; which means I'll hit everyone in the head every time with a hockey stick if they let me near one obviously. True story. They literally never let me play the sport in gym class ever again after that. I don't know if only half the class was able to play hockey every year for the only required semester of gym in High School or not but it sure seems strange to skip hockey every year when you have the sticks and a plastic puck; and beyond that not allow me and the poor unfortunates in my class in particular anywhere near a hockey stick when I ask to use them when I glimpse them in the back of the storage room. Glinting ever so dangerously as only soft plastic can.) I literally had to go to an after hours floor hockey club in the next elementary over to get my hands on a hockey stick. (because middle school hockey was held at the elementary, you see? Somehow that made sense to the people in charge. I guess I'll put it down to Coach theoretically banging a teacher at that particular school or something.)
