Searching for Fun (Spoilers inside)
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:16:22 am »

So i decided to end my fortress by breaching hell.
Problem is, i cant find it.

I see hell, i see glowing pits, i see forgotten beasts down there, but i cant find a way in because semi-molten rock seperates this world and the next whereever i poke downwards...

Ive mined out 3 strands of candy, but none appearently breached the circus, and im desperatly looking for a fourth.
Is it possible that a tube starts below the magma sea where i cant mine it because its "walls" are made up from molten rock which i cant pierce and its covered by lava on top?

Wait, did you not find the hollow space within the candy?
Dig deeper within the strands for the hollowness...if you dare.

I found 3 strands, all are mined out to the bottom where the next lower level is open space over what i suppose is hell since its slade all around.
One or two had hollow spots, but I didnt get any message, no demons spawned and they are empty now, so i suppose there might be a fourth.

So basically all 3 strands are tubes enclosed in semi-molten rock and terminate at Z-level -66.
I start seeing hellish terrain at around lvl -63, enclosed by a rectangular wall of semi-molten rock.
Level -67 is all around hellish terrain but with open space under all 3 tubes with slade floor nearby but too far to "land", and level -68 under the tubes is slade floor.

Can i construct an up/down stair to "bridge" an empty space z-level?
Will it "activate" hell?

Try dropping a dwarf down and see what happens.

My veteran elite squad descended the stairs and killed off 3 forgotten beasts that came rushing upwards.
Now my children are frolicking through hell like its nobodies business, not a single demon to be found.

There must be a fourth tube, and i cant seem to find it...

If you have DfHack, the command "reveal hell" will show you the location of all the tubes and what hell looks like. Even the command "reveal" shows you where the tubes are, it leaves blank black boxes where the candy canes are.

I never used dfhack... i unpacked it into my DF folder, but the exe just flashes a dos-window for a splitsecond and thats it.
If i run a command prompt and enter "dfhack-run reveal" it cant connect to localhost: 5000...

Which version are you using? Are you sure you're using 0.34.11?

Ok, i got it to run and appearently i only have 3 veins.
All are mined out.
No demons.

Wtf?
Did they abandon this part of hell because the weather wasnt nice enough?

EDIT: "reveal hell" says that its already revealed.
Which is true since i was running around down there, but still never seen a demon...

EDIT2: I used reveal hell while the map was revealed in the first try. When i hide the map and "reveal hell" it tells me that unpausing is disabled, but still i only see my 3 empty candy cones (2 of which had hollow parts but never to the bottom) and no 4th that is hollow all the way down, no 4th at all...

If you _really_ want to breach HFS, then you will need a tile that you can put a miner in which has SMR on the tile immediatly on the tile below that CAN NOT be revealed. If the SMR tile is revealed, you cannot use this trick. Additionally, there should be a straight shot through - with NO slade in the way (the trick doesn't work with slade). Channel into the tile with the SMR - you should be able to get through. Repeat until miner goes *splat* in HFS. If you hit slade, try again somewhere else.

If you have DFHack, which I assume you do now, allow me to give a few suggestions:
* pause the game, "reveal demon", advance one tick, "unreveal"
* dig with 'tiletypes'
* use 'feature' to mark HFS as breached

Ok, i might try to manually spawn the deamons, or just mark hll as breached...

Ive also heard its uite unusual to have forgottenbasts in hell, i had 3... maybe them spawning there broke hell in some way? Or is my hell flagged as cavern so that FBs appear down there?

Maybe in my world, FBs killed off all of hell and took over  :-\
