This seems like a game changer.
Climbing goblins? GCS on the ceilings, crawling up your well.
Dwarves able to climb over their own built walls to get out of places theyve trapped themselves?
Able to station marksdwarves up in tree tops?

Think about it: allot of the standard defenses will have to be rethought.

Or would it just entail only adventurers who can climb?

It will just mean roofing over your fortress and putting cage traps around cavern-based wells

It might also only apply to trees, at least for now.

It means more than that geail. Or at least it will to those of us who like to build up as well as dig down to any great extent.

Probably this. I can't imagine that we would have dwarves and goblins climbing walls.
However, they could climb trees that grow next to walls and get up that way.

Maybe goblins could bring ladders and grappling hooks to climb the walls?

I always seem to end up with a magnificent burial complex and nowhere near enough bodies to fill it, or far too many bodies and nowhere to put any of them.

Maybe dwarves will be able to build aerial screws out of a corkscrew trap component, some mechanisms, and a log? Think of the possibilities!

No, it's definitely feasible. Shut up.

Building overhang ledges = No more climbing for you.

Though it'd be interesting to see who can climb what, trees, smooth vs rough walls, grates, statues and moer....

Don't forget, Toady is talking about them smashing your walls, or digging into your fortress.  I hope the idea of an impenatrable fortress becomes impossible.  Meaning you'd need a more active defense, and you'd need to react during sieges to them breaking through your walls or digging in to your fortress one way or another.  That's what I'm looking forward to most, right now I just leave a 3 tile wide entrance, and fight the goblins at my gates, because it's boring to hide behind the walls if they can't get in.

So climbing will be the least of your worries.

I think it would be cool allowing goblins to climb constructed walls or non-smoothed natural walls. A wall wouldn't be the ultimate defense it is now...

I remember this discussion being made on the Minecraft forums back in Beta 1.3.

Terrible times.

Still, this'll be a blast in Adventure Mode, and no longer can you make half your map impervious to ground troops with a miner and [d]-[z]! (Why doesn't the siege just leave and go around??)

From what Toady said in his Future of the Fortress posts, I don't think he's optimistic about getting climbing into fortress mode because of pathing issues.

That said, I'd at least like to see it in adventure mode...

Oh, really?  I figured since he was talking about working on cooking for the new seed types, climbing would happen in fortress mode.  Unless seeds and/or fruit drop to the ground or something.

His most recent update regards exactly that. Plant products now fall to the ground. Still no fortress mode climbing.

Still, it must be planned. What if a GCS CAN climb? And worse, Jump? Imagine the nightmare. It'd be a death machine. More so then usual.
