As for goals, I've only got one thing to say.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

EXTERMINATE! EXTEEERMINNNAAAAATE!

That youtube compliation is just scary.
Your tension has been EXTEERMINATED.

Anyway, blowing up things doesn't seem like a fun idea all the time. How about going for a Von Neuman probe set up. Colonize one system, terraform as much planets as possible. Then move onwards to the next,... No permanent colonies, or only small token colonies.
With that expansion model you're going to be leaving hundreds of millions of people in your wake, thanks to population growth versus the time it takes to get shipyards running.

Less, if you carry your shipyards.  Any ship with a tractor beam can tow a shipyard.  Combine this with orbital habitats, orbital asteroid miners (which work on planets too), and cryo-pods, you could theoretically keep your civilization mobile.  Albeit very expensively.  All those ships incur upkeep cost.

Even if you turn off maintenance?

There isn't an option to turn off crew morale, so there's that. Also note that you'll have to stop for fuel fairly often unless you have some mondo large tankers.

Despite the fact that Steve said he'd include an option to turn it off in the patch notes -_-

He was too busy building awesome.  :D

Played around a little bit last night with it. Love, love, LOVE the reworked Sol system. Screw the rest of the universe, I could have a satisfying, deep game just building up in Sol and waiting for an initially generated NPR to show up.

....actually, that's tempting. No Jump Point research, just focus on building up and colonizing in Sol. Start the game with a fairly tiny universe (say, 100-200 systems) and 3 or 4 NPRs to start. Then wait until one of the NPRs jumps into Sol. Cue everyone freaking out and a crash program to study jumpdrives and build up a star-faring fleet. Could be fun.

Except that other systems don't exist until you explore them.  If you sit in Sol, then nothing happens.  You need to explore some, ore SM-in a neighboring system with an NPR if you want any background activity.

NPRs that you set to spawn at game creation also fly around and explore systems.

Just keep the Invaders off or they might show up and eat your playmates. Or you.

Bingo. Hence why I said 3 or 4 NPRs, to speed things up. Unfortunately, if they run into each other first and FUN ensues, it could slow things down considerably.

Strike the... well, EVERYTHING!

Starting systems 10.
Difficulty 500%.
NPR at start 2.
System Bodies Surveyed [TRUE] (because that's just a slow start).
Starting Research Labs 20 -> 25.
Empire Title: Terran Federation -> Terran Empire.

So let's see what generation we get...
Two scientists with Energy Weapons, another with Construction, a fourth with marginal skill in Defense, and then a few useless noobs.  And it's not Aurora without some crashes, so "System Info" is out of bounds.  Seems finding which of these rocks are useful, will be a slight issue.

I'm debating accepting ship names after people.  Or rather, likely ship classes named after forumites.  But in the meantime where do I start?

"System Info" is out of bounds.
This one has a relatively easy fix. All you need is to put the two missing images into your aurora/planetjpegs folder. I'd recommend copying some of the existing planet images and renaming them appropriately. Hopefully Steve will give us the actual jpegs in the next patch.

First order of business should be to start researching Const/Production tech, put a guy either on Mining, Construction, or Research improvement, and start building Military BasesAcademies.
