Let's Play Aurora, Hyper-Aggressively!
« on: October 08, 2012, 07:46:29 pm »

So Aurora 6.0 came out.  You should be excited.  I'm excited.  So excited I had to change my pants.  Unfortunately it's laundry day, so the only clean britches around were my Conquistador Pantalones.  Fate has dictated that something needs to be pushed over.

So let's get this started.  Here's how it'll work: you give me suggestions on how to go about things, and I implement them in the most violent way possible.  We'll start with generating a game.  I'll leave that for people to decide, or if no one provides adequate suggestions I'll just start it myself.

500% diffuculty modifier. More or less, depending on how lucky you feel. Also, no missile launchers above size 5.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

~75 systems max, 10 starting NPRs,
500% 1000% diffuculty modifier.
I'll give you an e-cookie if you conquer your tiny galaxy and force the other NPRs' populations to work backwater mines and barely livable industrial planets that produce more mines and freighters to perpetuate their slavery.

I don't like changing the difficulty modifier - the NPR will basically just produce more resources from thin air, and the NPR already have the advantages of no crew or fuel or other concerns.

Tight and densely populated sounds like a recipe for chaos.

So Aurora 6.0 came out.  You should be excited.

What new awsome exciting feature did it add?

Actually, it's mainly hindering features.  You have to care about crew morale (Or you should.  I won't very much.).  Engines get efficiency based on their size, with bigger engines actually producing more thrust for less fuel, a big missile revamp, and other minor tweaks like Sol system getting a work-over and Pluto no longer being a planet.  Dammit Aurora, I thought you and Pluto were bros!

That doesn't even make sense from Aurora's point of view.

Steve added in a category of 'Dwarf Planet' which replaced the 'Chunk' planet type. So Pluto got lumped under that, in addition to Ceres, Eris, etc.

He majorly overhauled the Sol system, I'm looking at it right now and it's glorious. Named asteroids, named asteroids everywhere!

5 systems, 100% npr generation chance  :o (and sm-throw system in once you are expanded, 5 at time)

should balance between actually finding aliens so aggression can be directed toward something and not dying the 5second death

1000% difficulty. The point of that is that it increases the mineral count on the xenos homeworlds, which in turn prevents them from being crippled by the mineral crunch. Giving them tens of billions of citizens and OOBs numbering in the hundreds or thousands is just gravy.

Aurora on small monitors:
1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Run Resize Enable

I'm not actually very sure about how to SM-in more systems.

Although it's worth noting that 100% generation chance, will only generate an NPR on a habitable world.  So if it gens a system with a sun and a barren rock, no NPR.  If it generates a system and it includes an earth-like planet, or suitable methane planet, then it would generate an NPR.  It's still up to the galactic dice if the system is going to be a contested ore-harvesting point, or an alien homeworld.
