According to the wiki, squids have an ink squirting ability, as evidenced by their tags:

Code: [Select]
[CAN_DO_INTERACTION:MATERIAL_EMISSION_WITH_HIDE_EFFECT]
[CDI:ADV_NAME:Squirt ink]
[CDI:USAGE_HINT:FLEEING]
[CDI:LOCATION_HINT:IN_WATER]
[CDI:BP_REQUIRED:BY_TYPE:UPPERBODY]
[CDI:MATERIAL:LOCAL_CREATURE_MAT:INK:SPATTER_LIQUID]
[CDI:VERB:squirt ink:squirts ink:NA]
[CDI:TARGET:C:SELF_ONLY]
[CDI:TARGET:D:SELF_ONLY]
[CDI:WAIT_PERIOD:200]
[CDI:FREE_ACTION]

Has anyone done any research into this material? Does it work to confuse predators, or is it simply an aesthetic thing? I've tried testing this myself, but squids don't appear in the list of creatable creatures in the object testing arena.

According to the raws, it hides the squid. And creates a cloud of ink.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

For no explicable reasons I had to turn my face to prevent the coffee spilling from my mouth to get on my wireless keyboard.

Toady mentioned in a fortress talk that somebody modded the game so that every time a cat head-bumps, its target turns into a cat.

So, last night's raw tinkering proved that a dwarf with squirt ink had no visible effect.
Also that a non fire immune creatures that can shoot a jet of flame have a low survivability.

So creatures can squirt ink on land, not just in water? What is the ink like, just a fluid which sticks to surfaces, like blood?

This is interesting stuff though, may add this to the wiki.
