The outsider is what they use to give you a reason to be able to use supernatural powers. That he sounds bored is probably on purpose because some of the times he talks to you he sounds like he got a new toy. The outsider felt like foreshadowing for some major event but he only makes comments on what you do a few times and nothing more.

Yeah, I'd gathered that he was some sort of trickster-god kinda dude who people used to (or secretly still) worship. He really feels kinda contrived, though, something they wrote into the setting late to explain the cool supernatural powers the game designers wanted. IMO it would have been cooler if the magic was only kind of there, people could still have worshipped the Outsider and the Overseer-church-dudes could still be prosecuting people for doing so. Having the Outsider be a dude in leather jacket that appears to talk to you in dreams, or every now and then, just feels kind of out of place out of place.

Maybe he has a really cool role to play still, but that's the impression of him that I got from the start of the game, at least.

I must say I'm having a whale of a time playing this game though stupidity seem to foil my plans.

I have greatly enjoyed Dishonored, although I seriously stink at games like this.  Atleast I enjoy the 1st person perspective compared to say, Assassin's Creed's third person view.

Combat is nice, the pwoers are pretty cool and fit a variety of gameplay, although I wish there were more upgrade levels and whatnot for them.   The gadgets are also pretty nice, and I adore the sleeping darts for the crossbow.

On the perspective of the Outsider:

The Outsider seems to be an entity of death and destruction.  As commented upon when you first meet the figure, he and his otherworld represent the beginning and the end of everything; and as more death and destruction (and the plague, whaling, ect.) continues to ravage the physical world, he gets stronger and more able to pursue his agenda.  At the same time, though, he isn't able to forcefully change the world, and thus has to give his living agents the choice on what to use his gifts for.

Take Granny Raggs, for example.  She heavily worships the Outsider, and is revealed later in the story to be a daemon-type monster who's controlling the Plague.  Creepy old witch, although she's funny as all get-out early in the game. Mwhahaha.

I'll definitely agree that The Outsider has serious trickster vibes. I mean he gave power to Corvo and helped him, but at the same time he gave power to the assassins that killed the empress, and to Granny Rags, and given all his talk of the future and the ways in which it can turn out, it seems pretty likely he would have expected things to turn out the way they did.

He seems to have the attitude of someone playing with a snowglobe, he shakes the world up, not out of any intent to inflict harm, but just to see all the little pieces floating around.

Also, since we're on the subject of the Outsider, I kind of have this sneaking suspicion that he might be Pierrot. This might be kind of a crazy long shot, but they seem to have somewhat similar features, The Outsider looks quite a bit like a younger Pierrot. Pierrot talks a lot about his "Door to Nowhere" early on that's supposed to be some kind of teleporter, I think sometime well past the narrative of the game, he succeeds in getting it to work, and steps through it only to find himself trapped in the void. Could be way, way, off, but I think it's an interesting possibility.

I just think that is a portal reference? because there is a portal looking thing painted on a walled up door in his workshop.

Is there any mention on what exactly is worshiped on the religion? I at least didn't find anything about that.

There is no mention of a religion, just the anti-cult organization.
And did anyone else think that branding the overseer was kinda silly? They got to think that some thing is weird when a bunch of guards gets rendered unconscious and their leader gets burnmarked by an unknown party.

There is DLC/expansions coming. The good news is that they will not be platform exclusive(i.e. hopefully no long delay between XBOX and Steam dlc).

I don't think it matters how one receives the heretics brand. After all, people aren't allowed to be in any contact with the heretic and thus he can't try to explain it.

However the whole heretics brand thing is kind of stupid, considering that it is reserved for overseers who "betray" the order and that overseers wear masks.

What I find funny about the mark is how Corvo applied it. He was supposed to put it on the forehead, but instead he fucked up and put it on the eye, making it look like a bear just mauled him. It just makes it even more ridiculous that it worked. Everyone's just like "Ey, he's got the mark... sort of. He's a heretic now because... tradition says so!".

Basically the setting is great, but the actual plot kinda sucks, I guess.

Secondly, yet another game with a huge plot fiat moment that completely breaks my suspension of disbelief. I get back from a mission, skulk around everyones rooms reading all their diaries and audiologs, Samuel the boat guy is acting wierd, and they offer me a drink. I'm supposed to be basically james bond crosses with assassins creed guy. So of course I just drink it and fall for the blindingly obvious trap.

Never mind that these guys turning out to be evil was pretty obvious from the moment you first meet them. Especially the Pendleton guy. I was seriously pissed off at that point.

I missed the granny rags thing too, but then again, I didn't search places too thoroughly. Agreed on the Pendelton being obvious bad guy and as soon as Corvo had the drink, I knew it was poisoned.

I also thought that "The Flooded District" was worst level of the game, with the exception of the last part of it. (Everything after the body dumping site.)

Favorite levels had to be "The Royal Physician" and the one where you kill the Lord Regent. All in all the game was pretty short and the plot quite mediocre, but the setting itself was awesome and I would definitely enjoy more.

well the dude WAS blackmailing a lot of people into supporting him, so my take on it is that they saw an opportunity to kick him out after corvo brands him and they took it
