... Can I get a new dwarf? ...
Sure, but I can't guarantee his survival. This place is really dangerous.
Can you wait to dwarf people until their dwarf actually makes it inside?

Great, I'm still alone, with nothing plump helmets, until a ghost gets murdurous and kills me....

This fort is awesome.

Can I get a custom profession name of "Survivor"?

That's actually a really good idea. I've got no idea how any migrants will actually make it to the cave, though.
But there's no point in them getting there unless I can get a pick as well. The cave is barely big enough for mastahcheese on his own...

Sure.

I'd also like to point out that this map has an aquifer. So, yeah, unless I can *somehow* get past it early, (and I can rarely do this without casualties in a calm embark), no stone for us.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

At least we could drink from/fish from the aquifer, so we wouldn't die....

Oh, wait....

I want to know what's up with the freaking flying lungfish. Is this normal/possible?

Anyway, nothing happened for ages, so mastahcheese remained in his cave.
More migrants arrived! Hooray! 5 adults and four children. I drafted the adults to defend themselves (I was going to type "children", but that would be lying) and a capybara zombie attacked.
Victory! With one casualty:

We have no chance of saving him(her?), so he's(she's?) gonna stay there.

I order my squad of four dwarves to run up to the cave. Capybara attack, and the children who were tagging along up to now scattered. Another dwarf was crippled. The three survivors reorganise themselves, but are attacked by InsanityIncarnate, his reanimated arm, and this thing:

They went down fighting.

The children kept running around the map afterwards. They're very quick; I doubt the undead will catch them until they try and sleep, or something.

I also found the pick while following one of the kids. It's in the middle of a herd of skeletal yaks.

But what is up with those flying lungfish!? No pun intended...

Hmm...any plans to kill the skeletal yaks without destroying the pick?

How would that destroy the pick?
I don't have any plans to achieve anything right now, except hope that:
a) One of the next migrants (if any) is a miner, and
b) Aforesaid miner lives long enough to get to safety.

Of course, using dfhack to encase the pesky corpses in obsidian is always an option.

It depends on how you killed the yak.
Oh, and here's an idea: Draft a migrant or two each wave to be a miner, and have them dig a pit deep enough they won't be followed. Then make said dwarf dig to the main fortress.

That would work if we had picks. What I meant by a migrant being a miner was that they come with a pick.

Shouldn't there be 2 picks? There were 2 plump helmets.

But I don't know where the other one is.

On a side note, sorry for not updating recently but RL is rather hectic. I'll try and get the update up tomorrow at the latest.
