Very important question
« on: October 06, 2012, 02:16:16 am »

Sorry for the lack of preamble, but everyone I know is asleep

Real quick, but when a guy vomits and passes out on the floor, how long until he's in the clear for alchohol poisoning and I can go back to bed? Anything I have to watch out for? Sorry I'm not a drinker so I don't know any of this protocol

Well, vomiting is good since that probably got some alcohol out of his system. Is it black vomit? If so, call an ambulance. If not, you're probably good.

At this point he's pumped his own stomach, which is all a hospital would do.

We wouldn't even do that. More likely we'd just make sure he did not choke on his own vomit& check his awareness every hour or so if he had any head injuries, and that's about it.

Do you live somewhere with socialized healthcare? I ask because chances are he's not as badly poisoned as you think, and racking him a healthcare bill might make him ungrateful

Do not sleep on your back, or let a drunk friend do that. Stomach so no choking on vomit in sleep.  Have bucket on floor next to them. Take car keys out of their pockets and give back in the morning (prevent DUI). Make sure they're still breathing.

Hospital might be needed and that's a judgment call.

if you're going to start moving him around at all.
Though it might not be necessary. If the guy got to his apartment chances are he's pretty screwed up but not in a comma.

For the record, we've left regular, responsive drunkars sleeping it off on their backs at the ER without consequences.

He turned out fine, btw. I waited a bit longer to make sure he wasnt heaving anymore let him sleep it out on my floor. He was in bed by morning so it's all good now.

I saw that happen to a guy once.  It wasn't pretty, but I'll thank any god you care to name that he didn't slip into a semicolon.
