What about bows and arrows? Wouldn't that be the weapon of choice of archers?

As of now, there is NO functional difference between bows and crossbows. Also, the 'Archer' skill relates to general ability to use ranged weapons.
What about the arrow and bolt? I've noticed differences in the RAWs between them. And the Dart.

Here are the RAWs for both:

In these, everything is the same, except the name of them and the class they are in... The CLASS tag only determines what the launcher is, because the launcher has the tag RANGED:(skill for shooting):(CLASS of ammunition)

Other than this difference that makes bows use arrows and crossbows use bolts, they are the same.

Blowguns (and the darts) are different, as they have both a much smaller size and a much weaker attack for the darts, and a weaker max force for the blowgun.

I believe the Fighter vs Weapondorf thing has been tested. For training purposes fighter contributes a ludicrously huge bonus to how FAST a weapon skill trains and their overall performance in combat. How often they utilise dodge and such. Really. All it means is their combat skills, with a high fighter level will go up much more quickly.

I believe the Fighter vs Weapondorf thing has been tested. For training purposes fighter contributes a ludicrously huge bonus to how FAST a weapon skill trains and their overall performance in combat. How often they utilise dodge and such. Really. All it means is their combat skills, with a high fighter level will go up much more quickly.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of such a relationship.

In light of this information I performed a blitz-study and organized 2 sets of 20 1vs1 ranged experiment cells. One set had no skills whatsoever, whilst the other set had Grand Master Archers. Both bolts and armor were made of candy to ensure virtually 100% of deflections, and so that all Marksdwarves expended an equal number of ammunition (100 bolt). Skill gain was restored to 100% as opposed to previous previous studies, where it was set to 1%.

At the end of the experiment (after having shot 100 bolts) all members of both teams were Skilled Marksdwarves. The no-skill team also advanced to Skilled Archer, whilst the Grand Master Archer team members became Legendary. So unless having your bolt deflected is somehow interpreted differently when gaining experience than a damage-dealing bolt, the Archer skill does not influence the speed at which the Marksdwarf skill is gained.

Perhaps then it's time for experiment #2? I certainly would appreciate someone with !!SCIENTIFIC!! aptitude doing a fighter vs weapon specialisation experiment. As i said, i can't recall where this information came from and it certainly wasn't through my own experiments. My training consists of spar for 5 years and kill anything that turns up. It certainly weeds out the chaff.
