Stumbled upon this on Steam Greenlight.  Already put my money for it on the game's Indiegogo page, anyone else see potential in this?  I really like how atmospheric the game is.

We have so many features planned for the game that without funding we are only able to bring the game so far for the initial release but we will incorporate tons more in the future content updates, all of which will be covered by your initial purchase

Now where have I heard that before...

Looks pretty kickass actually. I hope the building aspect is well developed.

I'm a bit sick of that overused "scary musical cue" thing tho.

Actually that's a direct link to Terraria, of which this game is now compared, in which "we will bring you tons more" becomes "I have a kid YOU DON'T KNOW MY LIFE fuck you I'm out of here."

So....it's just an assumption that there's actual building? Because none of that is demo'd, or even hinted at except by "And much more...."

I liked the music. That's about the only thing that peaked my interest.

Is this the 'sequel' to Terraria?

Edit: No, its not, that's Starbound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbound

Oops.

Also, working on Star Wars Kinect is not a good reference.

Yeah I haven't seen much yet about building, but I didn't really care for that part of Terraria much, I was always more interested in exploring.  If I want a sandbox building game I just play Minecraft.

Hopefully I'll have good things to say after I try the beta they're releasing on the 10th.

Well, finally roused myself to click the greenlight page.  Can't say I'm overly impressed.  The youtube video is jerky, but that may just be youtube, and it may be early beta so things aren't smooth yet.  The youtube video also has a "support crowdfunding" thing at the bottom the entire time like some amateur minecraft LP who posts seven annotations linking to other vids he made.  Really, it's possible to use annotations politely but much like a backless dress or a speedo, not everyone is capable.  Otherwise, gameplay looked... bland.  It's like, yeah, atmospheric shadows and digging and grenade-tossing-gun, but... it has no real hook.  At no point did I look and think "oh wow that looks cool!"  Terraria, if we're making that comparison, came out with boss videos and zombie hordes that made the viewer go "oh that looks like messy fun!" but Darkout seems to have no such big pull to it.

I dunno, it's like an established game company just said "Terraria was popular, why don't we make something similar?" without having any big drive or motivation to do so.  It lacks the spark and the heart of a driven game...

Agreed.  I usually just turn off annotations immediately anymore--is there some way to permanently disable them?

Otherwise, gameplay looked... bland.

I was interested for the first bit of the video where the cursor was going around, showing the environments (by the way, why is the cursor showing in that?  Could they not devise a better method?  It got to the point where I was wondering if that cursor was the character.) and then the player model showed up.  Like an airlock opening to a vacuum my interest was sucked out and hemorrhaging violently.

So as to not seem too jaded and cynical, I'll say that I hope it turns out better than it looks now.  They've already reached their goal, so, good on them.

Is this really fair though? I don't know any of the drama behind it (the "I had a kid I'm out of here" bit), but as far as new content goes the game did receive a good chunk.

I mean, it was a $10 game. I never expected them to devote their lives to it like Toady does with DF or anything - there were a few patches that added some new stuff (cosmetic outfits, buff potions, wall of flesh/hardmode, hardcore charecters, etc) and I was fully satisfied with that.

What did people expect?

People expected them to follow up on the promise of "We'll keep on adding content for as long as people are playing". If you make claims like that, you're setting yourself up to disappoint the fans.

I definitely got my money's worth out of Terraria, that doesn't make me any less mildly miffed.

I suppose the biggest draw for me is that it reminded me of Metroid more than Terraria.  And if the game ends up crappy, well, I've wasted $10 on worse things.
