If you keep DF at a smaller window size, does it still crash? And does it crash in pure vanilla (i.e. no tilesets/dfhack installed)?

The crash is directly related to hitting the 2gb memory cap. I can play for a couple of hours and after that I'll crash. The saves aren't at fault as I've played the same game on a machine with 3gb of memory and experienced no crashes. What I don't understand is the memory usage. Dwarf Fortress is eating 600mb at launch and will stay at 950mb on my laptop (3gb of memory) but on my desktop (64gb of memory) Dwarf Fortress expands indefinitely until it hits 2gb and crashes.

Tomorrow I'll use the Windows Advanced Options in msconfig to limit my maximum memory to 3gb and see what happens.

Also: I'll try turning off truetype fonts and I'll see what happens.

Hmm.  Sounds like a memory leak of some kind... 
This bug in the tracker might be similar?

Also DF still crashes no matter what size the window is at. Seems to have no impact on crashing.

The text issue has to do with the truetype font thing. Your game looks just like mine. While playing hit F12 and notice the difference. It has to do with spacing and names going over other characters. I am not really into the details of it, so I don't know if there is a fix.

As for the crashes... I have no idea.

I only tried large address aware after it crashed a few times.

I've found making quantum stockpiles has helped.

How much memory is the game taking up immediately after you load the game? If it's high, check how many Z-levels your map has - hold ">" until it gets to the bottom and note the number, then repeat with "<" to get to the top of the sky and take the difference. If it's really large, it just means your embark region is abnormally tall, which is typical of all worlds generated with "Create World Now" due to it generating island worlds (the rapid elevation changes between mountains and oceans really mess up the caverns); if you go into custom worldgen and generate a REGION instead, most embarks will have less than 50 Z-levels between the surface and the magma sea.
