I'd like a turn please! I'll be running 23a over WINE.

So, since this seems to be going slow, or at least slower than I've arbitrarily decided that I like, I download the old version, tried to check out quieturst's stuff, but couldn't figure out how to download it, and now I'm genning a world.

I have never played a version anywhere near this old.

You just open DF exe-file with some hex-editor and do changes that described at Quietust's page.
Anyway, go ahead!

I am way to Noob to do that, but my world just finished genning, time to strike the earth.

EDIT: Before I got off and kill myself, I've decided to check out the quickstart guide on the wiki, to get some bearings, and also took a look at the cave river page.

Now I'm checking Legends...... Oh.......
It seems you have to discover those......
Oh, well, lets go.

Some of those patches must be applied prior to embarking or they won't actually do anything.

Also, applying them isn't some sort of expert-only task - just run the hex-editor, open the EXE, go to the address, verify that the old bytes there are correct, then type in the new bytes (in the left pane), and repeat until you're done.

If that's too difficult for you, then just make a list of all the patches you want and I'll upload a prepatched executable somewhere.

[edit] Oh yeah, just remembered an important fix for the raws: Magma Men are broken and instantly melt when they show up. The wiki page has instructions on how to fix them - it's the same fix Toady used up through 40d.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Ok, I found a free hex editor, and after a long while of frustration, finally figured out how to work it (found out I had to use the Go To command, not the Search)

I implemented all of quietust's bug fixes, along with most of the bonus stuff, the only only I did not use was the last one for increased cave diversity, mainly as it was untested.
Also, I raised artifact limits to 75, the max.

Genning a new world now.
We now have "Moyodathaathira Sinaru", the Mythic Ageless Plane of Griffons.
Looking for a site now.
Any suggestions on the site?

Did they have volcanoes back in that version?
SHould we start a new thread for this?

You got every feature in .23a - as you dug "deeper" (to the right) you'd encounter river (which would flood periodically), chasm, magma river (no seasonal floodings :( ) and spoilery stuff.

Actually, when I choose to embark, it didn't give the option to choose an embark site.
I think I'll just try to assign good pre-embark choices myself. Hmm.... I don't think you can customize dwarves' names in this version, so I can't dorf anybody.

Should we start a new thread for this?
I'm thinking about it.

EDIT: Woah! I figured out how to choose the embark site, looking for volcanos.
EDIT: Strange, you can't embark just anywhere, it has special places that allow embarks, little X's that you can use, normal ground is not allowed, but that's to be expected.
So, any thoughts on Good/Evil, or Savage/Benign, or other sites?

No such thing as volcanoes back in 23a - just the magma river. With the bugfixes you've applied, dwarves should be smart enough to not try to drink from it.

Embarking in 23a is nothing like it is in current versions - there are only a few dozen embark locations in the entire world, and you need to select whichever one you like best.

Also, I would recommend applying the "cave diversity" patch anyways - though I haven't explicitly tested it, I've studied the code well enough to know that it probably won't cause problems, and I've already written a tool (available here) which deletes the duplicate entries (and also tells you what creatures you should expect to find).

I would go and apply that, but I'm currently already about to embark, I've got all the embark points spent, and I've got DF running in the background waitting for someone to post a suggestion for an embark location.

If I add that in the state I'm in now, will it take effect? If so, then I'll go ahead and do that.
