pop cap is really werid because when you set it your total pop can go well above it.

I would suggest allowing some kids earlyer on in your fort then later changeing it to 0 so no more pregnancy.

id also start off with 80 cap pop and up it as you see fit.

I set mine based upon what machine I'm using. If its my old, old comp with its 2 gig processor and only 512 ram, I set it at 50 and then raise it to 80 later on. If its my old comp, 2.6 dual core 1 gig of ram, I set it to 100. If its my newest one, I set it to 250. But if you're having issues with management and not fps, set it to 80 or 100 and download dwarf therapist. It's an extremely useful program to help you become accustomed to managing all the labors your dwarves have or need.

My current fort has a pop of 225.  And at any time 20-40 of them are idlers, and that is with most of the population drafted into squads and training at least one month each season.  A lot of dwarves running around, being housed, and consuming, but really not adding much to the enjoyment of the fortress.

At this point my preference is a pop cap around 90 or so.  Big enough to run industries, maintain a militia, and also carry out projects (though slowly at times).  Won't qualify for being the Mountainhome (need 140 to trigger that option), but that also means not having to worry about noble quarters beyond that of the baron/count/duke.

I set pop cap at 50. At 21 dwarves, had an influx of 35. Then one of 30. Then one of 25...

I think the pop cap is broken...

I usually have pop cap at 50 and baby percentage at 10, it makes for fortresses that have enough bodies to work without being flooded.

Doesn't stops migrants from bringing too much kids in, though :D

Annoyingly the first two migrants are hardcoded, then your fortress have to report back via liasion to stabilize and stop them from flooding over.

I set it at 100.

Of course, I hit 89 dorfs and then get a wave of 35.

I thought population cap only affected migrants, not kids.

In case it wasn't obvious, I do know that dividing by zero is a mathematical impossibility. I do not know, however, how this dwarven calculator would react if anyone attempted the impossible. Please, someone try! xD
If you look back in the thread, some people did try, and they got 8008135, which is significant only in that the digits resemble the letter in "BOOBIES".
And so dwarf fortress solves yet another of lifes great mysteries.

Migrant brings kids with them, it's different from childbirth within fortress.

Plus there're setting to cap birth rate and children percentage, that's separate from migrant population cap.

I had a fort running fro 3 years without baby birth. Population cap was set to 1. The baby caps were set to 100:1000.

In order to actually stop receiving migrants, you need to have a liaison leave when your population is equal to or greater than the cap.
