I just noticed something

What were the first people to make this game thinking? What would have to be going though their minds to make this game? I also wonder what made Mr Fox pick it up after the first game devs stop making it.

Well, that would be Toady One. He made a range of rather tasteless games back in the day, and LCS has one foot in that tradition. I quite like the game, but I have to admit that I doubt I would have come up with anything even close to it if he hadn't done it first.

Huh. I just thought Today One was the all over Mod on the forum.

Toady One is Tarn Adams, the programmer for Dwarf Fortress and all of the other games on this site, including the original programmer for Liberal Crime Squad. ThreeToe is his brother Zach Adams, who does a lot of vision and design stuff to help out. Despite the animal theme, I'm totally unrelated to both of them and not part of Bay 12 Games, I just happen to maintain one of their old games.

Ok, I didn't know Today One was Tarn Adams, I knew he was a programmer, but didn't know he was Today One.

The LCS is modelled on the historical SLA (Symbionese Liberation Army) of the 1970's who lead a self-proclaimed revolutionary war in California, which basically amounted to kidnapping, brainwashing, bank robbing, etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbionese_Liberation_Army

Today One combined that idea with the workings of a 1980's fantasy RPG game for DOS called Oubliette, for the party / explore sites / combat mode.

He also took the workings of turn-based agent-scheduling games like Gangsters & Republic: The Revolution. I don't know if Toady played either of these games, but he may have played ones which were common ancestors. The similarities are too numerous. I really recommend checking those other games out.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic:_The_Revolution (release 2003)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangsters:_Organized_Crime (release 1998)

The part about win conditions related to shifting public opinion seems to be the most original part of the whole deal. Although, that's exactly what you do in Republic: The Revolution. But in that case, it's against a fictitious fascist dictatorship.

So, LCS boils down to combining the gameplay from Oubliette & Republic: The Revolution, but setting it in America with the SLA as the protagonists.

Republic: The Revolution came out after the original LCS 1.0, though it was a similar time period. I never got the game because word of mouth on these very forums said it fell short of expectations.

It's worth a look. Most of the criticisms sound like a critique of Dwarf Fortress. But, i think it's something you'll only play through once due to the linear design.

It’s certainly not for everyone because of the poor design, weak interface and completely unfriendly learning curve, however those who like their strategy first and foremost and those interested in the games settings will likely gain enjoyment - just remember to scratch beneath the surface.

The rather clunky and standoffish interface, combined with the fact that gamers will be required to actually learn things before they are comfortable with the game might put off a fair amount of people who were initially excited about the game.

Feels like it was never tested by actual players. There are some great concepts here and the 3D cities are a truly impressive piece of programming. Too bad all this originality is hidden deep behind one of the worst game interfaces ever.

I'm actually wondering if both Toady and the Republic people were influenced by previous games that played similarly.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

This may be OT, but are any of the bad games R rated? It sounds like some of them may.

Been years since I've "not" played them, but I think some of the sub-games are inappropriate in content.

No More Stumpy-Wumples is about killing my avatar in various nasty ways.
I'm Voting for Myself is about not getting caught masturbating (by your mother).
Fuck You is a typing game with profanity.
And I don't think I've ever not-played the other two.
