The value of meals always struck me as being rather off, since their only real purposes otherwise are compressing your food supplies (making a stack of 90 food, say) or cooking booze. I don't really think of it as being in-character for dwarves to sell food, so I'd rather sell other goods. Stonecrafts, mechanisms, and particularly weapons and armor make good trade goods if you have skilled workers. I've taken to embarking with a Proficient armor/weaponsmith; he can turn a cost-24 lump of magnetite into a pair of value-1800 boots, for a 150x increase in value (if you have magma; slightly less if you have to burn fuel too), and that's not even for a masterpiece. These guys rack up value fast.

Ah indeed no cook... Well... one will immigrate sooner or later until that, raw puppy and fresh plump helmets for my dwarves. Anything I want to buy can be paid by rock crafts untill the point in which a fort will be filled with narrow armor and clothing left behind by gobbos. And in that point I usually just buy things so that I can get rid of those wothless clotes and armor. One stack of masterfully crafted and decorated steel bolts á 10000 monies (at least) takes far less space and are also usefull.

Exact.
My trading caravans always leave ecstatic because I pay them so much for their stuff, much of wich I don´t even need :D ).
At the moment I have 14 Anvils alone that probably will never get used (except as a source of iron) just because their purchase alowed me to get rid of some more of this narrow cave spider silk stuff  :D

I try to destroy the goblin gear (or melt it down) rather than export it, so that I keep increasing my exported wealth. I have in the past traded away one superbly-crafted iron anvil for three normal anvils, just so I could melt them down to make more superbly-crafted anvils.

And Why would you like to use "embark now" option? It certainly is not for beginners. I think you should try for first to find usefull starting builds from wiki. Spend some points on your dwarve's skills and pick good equipment.

I usually use this build: (differs somewhat from the 'normal' build of wiki)

Dwarf 1: miner 10
Dwarf 2: woodcutter 7, carpenter 10
Dwarf 3: mason 10, engraver 7, building designer 7
Dwarf 4: weaponsmith 7, armorsmith 7, metalsmith 7, furnace operator 7,
Dwarf 5: thresher 7, grower 10 (this is the one who plants the crops), brewer 7
Dwarf 6: stonecrafter 10, bone carver 7
Dwarf 7: Mechanic 10, appraiser 8, organizer 6, record keepper 6

I don't know how balanced build is this but i has worked for me.

and about the equipment:

1 pick, 1 axe, 1 anvil, at least 16 of every booze, some turtels, bunch of plump helmet spawns + little of all other seeds and some cheap meat (take many kinds to have more barrels). I also prefer to have 2 dogs, for livestock and wardog breed. Mmm... Puppy meat :P</STRONG>

as beginner of DF, i'll try a simple option. Prepare my embark take much time (and the interface is a monster! a BIG monster of this game!), and what i want for now is let my dwarf life after first winter  :D

Hmmm 10000gp bolts are nice but they need decoration and stuff.
I almost sure I had a stack of 20 cooked crocodile meat stew worth of 8k. And I have similar stuff laying around in my food stockpile.

I embark with the 10 ranks in cooking because I usually start without anvil and a lot of different meat, which makes the food to be much better.
Usually when the first cook arrives I have no meat (at least not that much) to have a lot of trading stuff (my dwarves usually eat plump helmets at start, well at least before I trade for a lot of gems and other cool things). And there's the situation when you have NO immigrant cook at all (while getting 10+ soap makers >  :( ).

I don't like stone crafts because they are cheap but take a LOT of place and (which is much more important) a lot of hauling tasks.

it is possibile to set (in a file, somewhere..) a user-selected "embark now!" option ?

it will be very useful for beginner DF user!

Actually that would be very useful for veteran DF players also, but no such thing exists as far I know.

It's been requested, but it's not been done yet.

The default embark supplies are terrible for a new player. They're merely very bad for an experienced player. You want more food, more booze, more seeds, dwarves with skills, and no anvil. That alone should be enough to last you through the first winter even if your dwarves do nothing but laze about on the surface.

The reason people embark with anvils is because people don't like to deal with the bullcrap that is "oh fuck, I need a pick and my miner's pick was destroyed in a collapse" and ten minutes later "where the fuck is my anvil" and shortly after "where the fuck is the dwarven caravan".

Okay, yes, and that's a perfectly valid concern. However, it's far less pressing than the concern of having a sufficient buffer of food and drink to be able to figure out how the game is played. Worst comes to worst, you could simply bring 50 copper picks instead of 1 iron anvil.

These days I tend to embark with an anvil, because I don't need the buffer; even without a soil layer it takes me less than a season to get farming up and running, which means I can get away with bringing 30-50 food and drink (honestly I bring the food more for the barrels, shells, and bones than I do for the food), and it's worth being able to buy out the first caravan with iron armor.

However, a new player isn't going to be even close to well-enough organized to need an anvil until the second year at the earliest.

Also, it wasn't really necessary to swear, was it?

you could simply bring 50 copper picks instead of 1 iron anvil.

you must not be playing 2010, because an iron anvil is now 100 points and a copper pick is 44, so you can only get 2 picks for (nearly) the price of an anvil, and at 100p, an anvil is not really that much of a drain on starting points.

Strangely DF2010 didn't exist in 2008...
