Markus Heitz Plays Dwarf Fortress
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:05:10 am »

The author of the book "The Dwarves" must play DF. He just has too...
His book SCREAMS Dwarf Fortress. My god.
Anyone read it? Anyone have some funny connections between his books and DF?

Considering the book was first published 3 years before DF had it's first public release I'd wager.... no.

I think this has come up in the past. If I recall correctly, Toady admitted at least having heard of the book but denied major influence?

Nearly every fantasy book I read that involves dwarves I think they must have ripped off  DF, or the other way round.

I was reading a book called War of the Flowers which doesnt even have dwarves in, its mostly about fairies. There is a part where they encounter a tower with a long engraving spiralling around the outside. The main character asks someone what is depicted in the engraving and the answer he gets is "Oh, mostly goblins getting killed"
I had to check to see if it was written before 2006 is was so Dwarf Fortressy I thought it might be a sly reference!

Let's call in convergent artistic evolution. The things that DF is based off of itself are numerous, and those things have influenced others in much the same way. DF does not exist within a vacuum.

I tried to convene an autistic revolution one time.  But, mostly we were too shy to get anywhere, and explosives are WAY too loud.

From what I know about autism (mainly from my younger sister), I sincerly doubt you'd be very sucessful.

Sure, go on, join the Revolution. I'll be siting here, by my self, sipping tea.

They really do. The internet can be a very safe place for people with Asperger's. People make allowances.

On the topic of Df similarity to other fransiches.

This is a game that sets out to be a generic fantasy world generator. Therefore, it might be similair to things like fantasy novels, just saying.
