Does the material a bed is made out of make a difference?
« on: September 25, 2012, 07:24:31 pm »

Im looking to improve my dorfs living conditions. In my current fort, i have ALOT of bloodthorn in cavern 3, will the material a bed is made out of increase, decrease, or affect the happiness of my little boogers in anyway?

If the dwarf has a preference for the material, it will make him happier. Also higher quality has an impact. For a dwarf who likes oak wood a masterwork oaken bed would be ideal.

If a type of wood has a higher value, dwarves will be happier.

Also, nether-cap beds are ideal for nobles' rooms because they won't get burnt in magma.

I have not been able to find any difference in the value of wood, it seems they all have a value of 3, am i missing something?

I think maybe some of the exotic woods like featherwood or nethercaps might be worth more, but I can't verify that right now.  Mods or strange mood made items (such as a steel bed) could potentially make a bed much more valuable.

Also, I don't think the dwarf will get any happier sleeping in a valuable bed.  I think it only matters if the dwarf admires it (stands next to it and ponders it a bit), and if it raises the value of the room that they own (affects the slept in a X bedroom thought).

The raising of bedroom value is the big thing.
And, AFAIK, all wood in vanilla has the same price.

I give my dwarves a 2x3 fully room, engraved by good engravers-- the base bed value loses import.

I am dubious of the preferred material clause.  I am aware of bonuses for dwarves WORKING with a preferred material-- try making a dwarf that loves iron and gauntlets make some iron gauntlets-- the quality will be WAY higher than expected based on skill and he'll be happy about it.  I've not noted a real effect by putting, for example, a tin cage in a dwarf's room that likes tin.

I mainly go for color.  All beds in my hospital must be made of white wood, which usually ends up being tower cap.

Other than aesthetics and material preferences, I think that wood is just wood.

I prefer my hospital beds to be covered in blood and vomit. I find it much more dwarfy. I also like the entrance and grass outside to be covered in blood. I just think about those merchants walking through all that, and past all the dead goblin bodies. Also trading blood and vomit soaked goblinite to them at not hit to the value of the item.
