What would be the word for a person from the moon?
« on: September 24, 2012, 07:37:36 pm »

This is a linguistic question that I doubt english teachers will need to address for a long time but I feel like Bay12 is probably up to the task.  Naming people from the planets seems easy, but not the moon, what's up with that?

Mercury: Mercurians
Venus: Venusians
Earths: Earthlings, Terrans, Earthicans
The Moon: ???
Mars: Martians
Jupiter: Jovians
Saturn: Saturnians
Uranus: Uranians
Neptune: Neptunians
Pluto: Plutonians

So what the correct word for someone from the moon?  Lunars?  Moonians?

Lunarian.

At least according to Final Fantasy 4.

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I think the answer is obvious, to people from the Moon.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Lunarian.

Lunarian's about the most regular one I see used (Sailor Moon has a disturbingly large amount of good fanfiction, crossover and otherwise. S'all there is to say, there.), and it fits the pattern better than most alternatives. I'd go with that'un.

Though a different naming heuristic might be in order for those living on satellites and non-planets. Hrm...

Lunatic is a pretty good word come to think of it.  Lunarians sounds funny but I guess it works.

Somehow "Saturnians" seems really awkward to me.

Anyway, I vote for Lunarian as well.

what the correct word for someone from the moon?

Loonies. People are nostalgic. The US carrier Enterprise and space shuttle Enterprise were both named after the starship Enterprise from Star Trek. I think the most likely fictional source for the name would be this:

"Publication date   1966
the Moon (Luna), of whom most inhabitants (called "Loonies")"

Wikipedia says: Lunarian. Or Selenite.

More interestingly, did you know there is a entire article on space demonyms? Thats what you're looking for here, a demonym. its lunarian. I'm being serious, thats what it says. Right here: Moon, Lunarian. Did you know the milky wayers are Lacteals? I bet you didn't. Not that organisms from other galaxies will be capable of communicating in english, but good to know.

It really depends on if you care more about (at least semi-standard) classical designations for the people of a place, or for Heinlein's vision of the future.

It has been rather difficult to avoid referencing the Sailor Scouts.
