What is interesting is some factions actually have Medieval 2 total war units. Which are unrecruitable but they start out with them.

Research Bayonets, and I request at least a unit of line per school, our research must not fall into enemy hands!

We have one school, and I cannot afford to spare any line infantry. Hell, I'm losing with all my line infantry in play.

Enemies will never attack with forces that can be beaten by one line unit.

Send your rake to the school in Berlin and sabotage the fuck out of it EVERY TURN.

Edit : Also, keep in mind to be patient during siege - as attacker - as long as you have cannons, the defending AI will just slaughter itself by walking out and standing in front of the walls (If you choose the correct approach)
It is the worst defensive AI I've seen since...

..now that's a good question.

Having never played Empire: Total War before, would you mind giving a quick run-down about the techs that we can research?

Meh, they can always draft more peasants.  But them walls are basically a precious work of art.

Having never played Empire: Total War before, would you mind giving a quick run-down about the techs that we can research?

Three types of tech:
Military
Industrial
Political

Military enhances your soldiers, and comes in a further three varieties: Infantry/Cavalry, Artillery, Naval
Industrial enhances your farms, mines, and etc. Three types: Farms, Mines, Trade Good stuff (IIRC)
Political enhances a variety of things, and allows you to build awesomer schools, but all of the techs give you a negative to public order, represented by 'Clamor for Reform'. Three types, but all the techs are pretty standalone.

I'd give a further run down on what individual techs there are, but there's a lot. Infantry gives you stuff like better bayonets, better firing drills, carbines (God hell yes, the carbines) and square formation for defending infantry against cavalry. Artillery gives you stuff like cannonballs that explode, cannonballs the burst into flame, cannonballs that are giant shotgun shells, cannonballs that burst into a cloud of poisonous, acrid vapors, and more kinds of cannons. Naval is not Poland's cup of tea.

Industrial, they aren't too important individually. Just know that each one makes you more money.

Political, uh, you'll have to ask ZrK to explain them. :P

I meant can you give me a run-down on the techs we currently can research. I've played Napoleon before, so I know how these things go.

Oh, plug bayonet. It's a bayonet. We don't have any. Using it means your rifle can no longer shoot for that battle.
Uh, I believe the next infantry one is something cavalry related. Shortened Carbines, but they're not the good carbines.
Then canister shot. It's a shotgun shell for your cannons.
Then explosive shot I believe.
Then the naval techs.

First in industrial is the two farm related techs. I believe one gives you a percantage more income, the other gives you more trade goods per farm.
Then a basic steam pump, which increases mining production.
Then spinning jenny and something else cotton related. Both of which give you more trade goods/a small percentage to income.

Then there's empiricism, which makes techs research 10% faster and doesn't have 'Clamor for Reform' attached. And the other two techs both give bonuses to money I believe.

This. Grapeshot is for ships. Canister shot is for land battles.

Obviously we'll have to research canister shot as soon as possible, because canister shot tears bloody big holes in enemy infantry if positioned correctly. Unless we have a pressing need for more money, we should research empiricism for more research.
